Hi I have a 1981 cuddy cabin with 260hp OMC motor and noticed gear lube leaking just a little out of the check oil level plug after the first time i used it. Took it out twice since then and it ran great. It still seems to be leaking a little gear lube from that plug. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

If gear lube is getting out, than water could be getting in... Is the little washer there? Around here you can get a few of them for a dollar at the marine store. Can't hurt to replace top and bottom if you didn't do it during your annual lube change. Don't over tighten when reinstalling the plug. pull some fluid to make sure water hasn't intruded and mixed with the gear lube. You can tell by the 'milky' streaks in the drain pan.

OMC and Volvo Penta drives use an O ring on that upper dipstick. I’ve had corrosion on the seat that prevented a good seal and used a new ring with RTV to solve the problem.

As stated if oil is coming out water has probably gotten in. You can either pop a plug out to look at the oil’s condition or dip a chop stick or something similar in and drip it onto a plate to have a look.

I would assume the oil is contaminated and change it again.

Is the oil leak around one of the plugs on the outdrive?
If so, sounds like the fiber washer (seal) is missing from the plug.
