Gear lube and bilge issue???

I am wondering how much will burp when I put it back in the water tomorrow...first run since I changed it out last week.

I have an extra quart in the boat to top it off.

After a couple hours running check it and it should have burped by then

Yea, I plan on checking it a bunch tomorrow, since we will be wakeboarding on and off. Ill let the engine cool, check it, go for a run, repeat.

Im so curious the difference I need to make up after the air is all out

Ran it for about 3.5 hours, kept checking and checking...no air burped out, and level in the resevoir is the exact same

I am quite surprised.

Last year, I had to add an ounce or 2 every other week. This was at about 3 hour intervals. I never saw any leaking or slicks in the water.

I had my OD removed and serviced at the end of last year. No repairs were made, it was just removed, pressure tested, lubed, and reinstalled. This year, I have 5 full weekends of use on her and have not had to add a single drop. Not sure why, but it stopped.

Still losing gear lube. Have added over a quart so far this summer. Water still getting in. They're going to look at it again this week. I'm optimistic they'll figure it out this time.

If they pressure test the outdrive, they should be able to figure it out. Let us know what they find.

Andy,
Same boat, same year, same problem. Mine didn't happen until after the 20 hour service over the 4th of July. I put a 1 1/2 quarts in over a three day period, about 8 hours of operating time. I'll be curious to see what your dealer says. I'll post their diagnosis of mine.

Tim - not glad you have the issue, but good to hear I'm not alone. Maybe there's some common problem with this boat / engine design. When are they pulling yours from the water? I'm stopping in at the Marina tomorrow to see what they've found on mine.

Andy,
They are pulling it this week. They are going to pull the drive and pressure test it. They sent a tech to look at the prop seals, and he said couln't find anything wrong. Sure enough, next time out more lube disappears. I got a pretty good idea where it was going when we stopped to swim and I dove into oil coated water. What's weird is that there is oily water in the bilge, but no evidence that any water is mixing with the gear lube:huh:. Oh well, I let the professionals handle it. I'll update this post when I find out, please do the same.

There's another '07 in our marina, I'm going to ask him if he has had a similar problem.

Tim

I checked in yesterday and the service manager still saying they can't find why it's losing the lube. He said they pressure tested it (but they didn't pull it out of the water - not sure if it's possible to pressure check while it's still in the water). He said he's suprised that there's no lube in the bilge.

His next step is to call Sea Ray to ask some questions. I'll give them a couple more weeks then I'll ask them to replace the boat!!

Tim - did you ask the other 270 SLX owner at your marina?

Andy,
I'm going to the lake tomorrow and I'll ask him if he's there.

From what my service guy told me, they have to have the boat at their shop to pressure test the drive. The have to pull the drive to pressure test it from what he told me and what I've seen here. I've actually talked to two differnt service managers and they both told me the same thing, so I would question whether they actually did a pressure test on your drive:smt021.

Man this sucks, mid-summer and no boat! :smt013 If you've seen some of my earlier posts, I have had a long and trying few months trying to get this boat right. MM has been trying very hard, but...My buddy bought a Chaparral 276 the same time I bought this one, and his boat has not spent a minute in the shop besides the 20 hour service.:smt009 Might be time to talk to the Chap guys!

Fortunately, my Chap buddy is kind enough to take us out on his boat this weekend. Even if MM doesn't have our boat yet, I'm not comfortable running it as is. Been told there could be a warranty issue running the drive when I know (and it is documented) that it's busted.

1.5 quarts in 8 hrs is alot. I don't care where the actual leak is it should be easy to find. Have you called SR? It would be worth doing and I think they could motivate your local dealer to "get into your problem". As frustrating as this seems I think your problem is a simple one, if the techs get serious about it.

woody,
It is a lot of lube. We were swimming behind the boat last weekend, and I could smell the oil. It is coming out of the drive, because there's nothing in the bilge, so the line from the tank to the drive isn't leaking.

The dealer is very serious about fixing this, so i am confident they will find and fix it.

We used the boat all last week and didn't have to add a drop of gear lube:smt038.

MM pressure tested the drive, and could not find the leak. They even left it under pressure over night. So they started taking the drive apart an examined it piece by piece. What they found was the the prop shaft had a groove in it running below the prop seal, and the lube needed to be hot to leak there. They replaced the prop shaft and seals. Seems to have worked as we put about 12 hours on the boat and the lube level didn't chane at all.

It's nice to have my boat back. I can't say enough about the Nixa, Mo MM service department, they are simply the best.

Andy - did your issue get resolved?

Wow, cant blame them for not finding that faster...tough to diagnose until they had to do a piece by piece inspection.

Im happy for you that youre back in perfect shape.

yeah, pretty tough to diagnose. I'm just surprised it took so long to show up.

Since I mentioned my friend's Chapparrel in an earlier post, I should mention that he had to be towed in a couple weeks ago. Seems the gears in his Volvo drive shredded and they had to replace the whole unit...
