I agree - lets get it going with a Gas Gauge issue

Have a 95 Sea Ray 300 Sundancer new to me this spring. Has twin 350 Inboards and twin 100 Gallon Gas tanks. The Starboard Gas Gauge fluctuates. After a full tank of gas it reads full. 2 Hours later gauge is 1/2 tank lower than Port. Think its the sender or gauge and how would I check???

Thanks,

villain style,

I pulled your question out and started a new topic as to not get off topic and also more people will see it and be able to help with your issues. Good luck with it.

Here's a quick and dirty test:

Connect a jumper wire from the fuel sender center lug to the ground on the perimeter of the sending unit mounting flange. Check the gauge on the panel anf if it shows past full and pegged, then the sender is bad or giving erroneous readings.

If possible, you could wire tank 2 to gauge 1, and tank 1 to gauge 2. Then see if the problem goes with the tank or the gauge. Maybe you can do this at the instrument cluster.

You could also check the resistance to ground looking back into the sender. You could do this at the sender or at the gauge. In either case, you have to disconnect the wire going to the gauge. A full tank should read about 20-25 ohms, a half tank about 110 ohms, and an empty tank will be near or above 200 ohms (maybe 235 ohms).

My guess though is that you have a bad sender.
