Does anyone know of a way to use a Garmin handheld, GPSMap 76cx to provide a real-time display on my laptop which is running the Garmin Map Source Program. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Nope

Can't answer specifically, but I did have a great experience calling Garmin Tech Support on questions with my 498. They seemed to have all the time I needed to answer all my questions.

Brimanst.
I use the older "EMAP" and I have not hooked it up while the Mapsource is running. I don't see why it won't work though. Best of luck.

I have a GPS Map 76 connected to a laptop which is then connected to a 17" daylight viewable monitor on the bridge. The Garmin unit is connected to the laptop with a special interconnect cable you can buy from Garmin. The software for the system is Mapsource which is also made by Garmin and loaded on the computer. You can operate the Mapsource program without the use of the keyboard (I use a stationary wireless mouse).

I installed the system after my first trip to the Bahamas where I found my Raymarine L760 (came with the boat) to be inadequate for my needs.

I plot my course on the laptop (wherever I want), then save it on the hard drive. The system provides a level of detail and accuracy that far exceeds the older Raymarine unit. The suggested routes that come with Mapsource are amazingly accurate. Last year, we went to Eleuthra and traversed the Devils Backbone. I paid a guide to get us through but was surprised to see that the guide took us right on the suggested route.

On a side note, When I set up the system, I added a mini camera in the salon and one in the engine room. The salon camera is useful when I'm crossing the stream as the family usually stays inside and watches TV. I want to make sure I know where everyone is when I'm on the bridge alone. I also can watch SAT TV from the bridge. The system has PIP capabilities which is awesome.

I've been using the system for about 2 years now and it works great.

Any other questions, let me know.

What cable are you using? I am using the USB cable supplied with the unit, but there is a round 4 prong plug as well.
Thanks.

Odyessy, I have a vga port. How would i connect to a 9 pin rs232? JC

the serial port connects the GPS unit to the computer. The VGA port connects the computer to an external monitor. You need both to work unless you intend to view the chartplotter on the laptop screen.

Just to post some closure on this, in case anyone else is interested. I did get this to work with the USB cable. I ended up downloading the free program from Garmin called NRoute. This program allows for the realtime plotting on the maps and routes that you can import from their MapSource program. The only caveat is that NRoute can only read the Garmin DB version 2 and my MapSource defaults to saving all the routes as Version 3, so I had to "Save As" .gdb version 2 before i imported it into the Nroute program.

Overall, it worked fine since I got the boat home with it :smt038 .

Thanks for all of those that helped.

Brimanst, Did you use the Serial port adapter from Garmin and did you use a Laptop or Desktop????JC

JC3,

The unit came with a usb cable to upload charts and maps. I used this same cable with my laptop. There is a plug for the 4 in serial, but I did not use it. I hope this helps.
