Super cheap price on a very popular unit. While supplies last.

Do you ever have any 10" or 12' Garmin touchscreen units of this nature?

I have often pondered, exactly what is a "Remanufactured" unit? Is there a common definition or it will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer? Are they as good as new?

I think this will vary substantially depending on both the circumstance and the manufacturer. With electronics sold in the USA once a unit is packed, shipped and received by a customer it can no longer be sold as new again (if said manufacturer follows the letter of the law). So in some cases refurbed/reman can actually be 100% new, untouched, even unopened boxes. Could have simply been an incorrect shipment. In other cases it could have had a part replaced, repaired, etc. Enough that the MFG is willing to warranty it.

For companies that attend trade shows the refurb strategy is a good way to unload the gear they bring to the shows. Otherwise they'd have to give it away or scrap it.

It depends on the company and the product. My employer has a consumer electronics division. Much is sold though stores like Best Buy, Amazon, etc. Lots of stuff gets returned and anything returned can't be sold as new again once the box is opened. We'll take it back, inspect it, make any repairs as needed, repackage it, and resell it as "refurbished" or "remanufactured". Usually it looks and works like new.

We sell the refurb units in several ways. Via a "company store" as refurbished product. Some are kept to use for warranty exchange / replacement purposes. Also, when customers call in for help with a broken, damaged, or old product, sometimes there's nothing we can do or the cost of repair isn't feasible. We'll offer customers the option to buy a one of several replacement products at a discount in the same class as what they have. We'll use the pool of fairly current refurb models for the offering.

My employer also has a B-2-B electronics division that sells via authorized dealers. "Refurbished" and "remanufactured" each have different standards for these products. We also have "factory produced new models". We collect products that have been used but still have a lot of life left in them - typically products that are coming back from a lease. For the first two it's basically different levels of cleaning, testing, and replacing various consumable parts. Remanufacturing is a deeper level and more extensive. We then offer them to our dealers or our own direct sales as a refurb product for price-sensitive customers. "FPNM" takes an old product, strips it almost to it's core, and builds it back up. It has a new model name, the counters are reset, and it gets a new serial number. It might have some new capabilities, too. All of these are done for older, used models that have been popular.

This thread reminded me that I forgot to measure the panel above my steering wheel this past weekend to see if it would fit.:mad::mad:

Joe, FIFY. I mean, if one will fit, then so will two! :D

The 741's and 742's fit perfectly in that space. The 7608 will need about a little more than an additional half inch in H&W?

Just eyeing it, it looks doable. If you have a deco panel in that row, the 7608 might be taller? I think Stee has his 742's mounted in a panel - maybe he can chime in with how much room is on the panels.

I was going to measure when I was at the boat this past weekend and forgot all about it. After see yours, when I upgraded my stuff I moved my AP all the way to the left and VHF all the way to the right so I could fit a 742 in that area. After seeing this post I was wondering if the 8 would not be to tall. The 7's are 5 5/8" and the 8 is 6.3" (height). I would probably get the 8 if it's not taller than my panel. Guess I'll have to wait till next weekend now.

FP sent me a cardboard template of the panel so I can mark it up with a layout and send it back. It arrived yesterday, which would be perfect timing for you, but they sent me the switch panel instead.
