Just had my Garmin 740s installed and realized they have it flush mounted nice enough but it's cocked at a 45 degree angle to port- two questions: Do I need to program an adjustment to compensate for the difference? #2- do I need to install an additional antenna to get better accuracy with reception?

The Garmin does not care how you mount it - it is its GPS that tells it what way the boat travels so you could have it facing backwards and it would still know what way it is going. But when you are "docked" or not moving much - it wont be able to tell you which way the nose points unless you put in a real heading sensor. ($200-$900)

If you GPS reception is weak - you can add a GA30 (discontinued) or GA38 passive GPS antenna. The GA38 is made for new Garmins with Glonass receivers - but works fine with the 740. Garmin 700 series does unfortunately NOT make use of NMEA 2000 GPS units/antenna.

You don't need an additional antenna. It is designed with an internal to obviate the need for an external antenna. You'll get the same accuracy. Mine works great on a 'dancer, under a full enclosure.

Looked up how the helm is situated on a 440EB and understand how they mounted it. No worries. Like Kaz said, it'll track your position regardless. Most GPS units (even those for autos) don't determine correct orientation until the vehicle/boat starts moving. If you want to know what direction you're pointed when stationary, check your compass.

+1 on no antenna, and also no heading sensor. Only time mine is confused is when I back out of my slip with the radar overlay turned on. Radar always looks forward, but without the heading sensor, the GPS turns the map around while backing thinking that the stern is now the bow. That's a slight inconvenience I can live with for 6-800.

You guys CAN get the GS25 antenna from Simrad for about $200 - that gives you heading sensor that is fine for radar overlay. (But "should" not be primary source for an autopilot or MARPA - but does work)

But the 700 series won't use the GPS receiver part - only the heading sensor part :)
