Im replacing the old radar and useless GPS on my 1990 390 EC, Wondering if anyone has any experience with having done this job...? I do most maintenance on the boat , just looking for any hints or pictures of a prior post...?

I'm getting ready to install a 740s as well. I decided against the radar for now. Maybe I'll add it later.

I removed most of my old electronics. Now I need to figure out what transducers are installed in the boat. I think I have 2 thru hull and one transom mount. I did see one tag at the helm that says Airmar 50/200. Maybe I'll get lucky and I can use what I have.

The 740S is a great GPS. It does not support MARPA however. I did the install myself and really did not have to many issues. I installed the GMR 24HD at the same time and did have a little trouble running the wiring for the radar thru the arch. I had to dig out all the silicone at the bottom of the arch so I could pass the wires thru. I used a 10 inch aft leaning pedestal and a 6 degree wedge. The radar works great, I just wish the 740S supported MARPA.

I removed all the old electronics from my 390 2 years ago and mounted a Garmin 4212 in a NavPod on the left side of the dash where the old radar unit sat. I have the 24HD radar, GDL40) cellular weather and 2 GFS10 flow meters. This winter I added a Garmin 546S to the right side of the 4212 as a back up to the 4212. The NavPod puts the 4212 up close enough to operate while seated.

I have the 740, GMR18HD radar and a sounder. Did not do xm weather, or heading sensor. I really like the unit, though I wish the screen were a bit bigger at times, but mostly when I'm actually navigating along a preplanned route. There are some info boxes that take up more of the screen than I would like. That said, I only do that when going someplace new or where I'm unfamiliar, so it's not that big of a deal.

I really like having the ability to use homeport and pre-plot routes to transfer to the head unit. It makes it easy and takes the guess work out when going some place new, and is also easier than doing it sitting at the helm, though its not all that hard using that method either.

I did not do my own install, but I watched Vance from BOE do the majority of it. The dash was thicker than I imagined on my boat. Also +1 for threading the RADAR cable down the arch and getting through where the arch joins the hull. There was A TON of silicon and it took him a while to poke through it and clear enough to get the radar cable through.

Thanks, Im wondering how difficult and how much of the cockpit vinyl siding had to come out to get the Radar antenna "snaked" thru the arch....? I cannot get the old radar cable through the small hole visible through the lower access plate on the stbd side of the arch. Seems I may have to remove the vinyl side area to the right of the helm seat...?? Will removing the vinyl siding provide a look at the cables running from the arch to down below...? thanks brian L.
