I am asking the same question regarding transom vs throughhull. My installer has recommended the transom unit but the through hull seems less likely to be damaged and neater. The only concern is having to drill a hole in the bottom of the boat. I'm sure this is no problem for many but bothers me somewhat with a new boat.

I installed the transom mounted unit.
Here's my install. I have it combined with my heater install but you'll see the transducer install too. I wanted to install that during the heater install since I had all the panels down.

If you elect to install the transom mounted version, definitely take my advice on the forstner bit. It's make a very nice clean cut.

Great job on both installs. I appreciate your response. I am still debating the decision but probably leaning more to a transom mount as well.
