anyone still using one of these? Came on my 380, not sure how much I can gain with a software upgrade? I am in a small lake in central Illinois, I don’t need a ton, just some deaths and a little better detail than what I am seeing right now, I think the software date was from 2011

Thanks in advance!
Chris

Lots of people are still relying on 42XX's and 52XX's. They were good units, with IMO the best user interface of any MFD, including the latest Garmins.

There are software updates available free from Garmin. The latest was 7.8. I ran it on my 5212 and it was stable. If yours isn't running it, it's worth your time IMO. Some of the software updates improved the way waypoints are displayed etc, but the changes won't be significant.

If you want improved cartography, you'll need new maps/charts from Garmin and it won't be free. A used G2 Vision card would be ideal, but there are so many counterfeits out there that I can only recommend you get one from a trusted source.

If you can't find a G2 Vision card, you'd have to check with Garmin to see if there's an upgrade that's inexpensive enough for an old plotter.

I just replaced my 4212 but prior to I update the maps with a 32GB card and it slowed the unit down. Im not the original owner of the boat so im not sure how well it worked before but after you spend $400 or so on the map update you can spend another $400 and replace it with a 742. Plus the current 4210's are selling for $500-600 on ebay so you will at least gets something out of it.

Just a thought.

A G2 Vision card causes noticeably slower performance. Worth it for me, but 4xxx/5xxx's are slow.

I have a ton of Garmin products from boating to triathlon. The more I update the units the slower they become. Eventually the processors can't handle all the upgrades I guess.

I've had several upgrades improve performance. Before ver 5, the boat could outrun the redraw on my 5212. ...but that redraw performance was my biggest complaint. If I had to do a lot of panning, sometimes I'd eject the card, pan, then re-insert the card!

The last update on the unit only showed the basic map. When I added the latest update and the satellite imagery the unit ran home to mamma. Oh well.

For the money its worth a shot but thats a HUGE discount for a map update. Smells fishy .

In my opinion equate the updates to an older cell phone or or computer. While the unit itself can last a long time its ability to function effectively degrade over time.

As far as replacing the 1242 is actually smaller and weights less so it will easily fit in the same spot. The 942 or 742 will easily fit as well. Just an opinion.

Great info, thank you for all the input. The 4210 is cut/recessed into the left cherry/laminate panel. If I replace the unit, I am guessing I would need a new one, how much should I expect to pay for that?

I did find this
https://www.ebay.com/i/123229759601...9%26rvr_ts%3D93d709d816a0ab456711a080ffffd120

If I was able to limit the area of the maps, would that help with speed?

Thanks again!
So, I put this update in this morning, for $50, I think it will be money well spent. I may still upgrade, but there is no immediate need. The details are much better. I will post after I use it with how the speed/response is
