GARMIN 182C

I can't answer that for you. Depends on how much you want to spend. Garmin has some nice new units out called the 340C. Furuno has a great new unit out called the FCV-620. But the GSD-20 BB Sounder module would work well for you too if you don't want to invest in another screen. If your boat is Outboard you will get good results from either the P66 ducer or the new Tilted Element Ducer.

-Furuno 620
-Garmin GSD-20
-Airmar Tilted Element Ducer
-Garmin P66

We had a Garmin 182C installed when we bought our 280 Dancer in 2003. It works great and I am getting to understand the bells and whistles. Can anyone give me a good reason why we should upgrade to a newer model?

#1) If you want a radar + char plotter in one
#2) If you want a larger screen

Thanks for your reply Presentation. We don't have radar. Nor are we thinking about installing it at this point. The size of the sreen is just fine. Am I to assume from your answer that there is no reason to upgrade from a technology standpoint?

The Garmin 182C has WAAS. This is the current technology. No amount of money can get a more accurate GPS at this time.

After thinking about this a little more I came up with one more possible reason. There are models on the market with brighter screens. So if you have difficulty seeing the screen on a bright sunny day that may be a 3rd reason to upgrade.

Some things to consider:
- Make sure you have the current map chip for the area you boat.
- Buy a blank and form time to time save your waypoints / routes. If your unit were to stop working or be stolen you would be able to upload the information you have spend so much time inputting. The alternative to this is to buy the kit that allows you to attach the unit to a laptop and make a pack up that way.

The 182 is a good basic unit in my opinion.
