Wow, step out for a few days on a business trip and get too far behind to catch up. :smt024
One point worth clarifying on this thread more explicitly, which I confirmed with Garmin today, is the map products and where they can be used. Nothing new, but felt it was needed here.
There are essentially 3 marine mapping products:
To overcome the double purchase penalty for maps I had offered up an alternative planning method using free maps on the PC with a non-Garmin PC product in an earlier post, then showed how you can move the data for routes and way points from that software through MapSource and onto a Garmin plotter.
Now, if I see this correctly the original intent of this thread was really poking in at the fact that in order to use an ALL GARMIN solution to PC planning for your Garmin plotter you have to buy a set of maps for the PC and if your device doesn't have built-ins another set for your device. This is true if you have a 4000 and 5000 series. Not true for those with a 3000 series.
So either buy a set of Garmin maps for your PC and use their Vision plotters, or use a non-Garmin PC product and convert your data as needed to load up in your Vision unit. Either works. Just how much money do you want to spend?:smt038
Yes Chuck1, I agree MapSource is a superior planning tool, so pick your poison. Free maps and non-MapSource planning tools or buy the maps and use MapSource. At least until Garmin gives us a new and improved model.
Chuck1, all correct, but not really new. They were preaching this same story last year when I spoke to them about it. I called in today to order an update for my built-in maps, which are not ready yet. Maybe another month. Talked with rep a lot about these issues. Confirmed what you heard, but it is the same they've been saying for over a year. Which either means we are real close to a solution or still years away and its lip service.Update: Well we must not be the only ones complaining about the problem. Talked with Garmin Tech Support about it. Yes they know they have a big problem. The tech I was talking with said they have had a bunch a calls about it. At this time there is no fix. Yes you can buy maps that don't work with the new units and use them on the PC. He hopes they are working on a new program or a way to use the maps from the new unit, but at this time nobody know (IF or WHEN) it will happen???
