For the best illumination, i suggest at least two lights, one on each side of the transom. On a single engine outboard or I/O, the drive makes for a nice shadow right in the middle.

If you trailer the boat and will be removing the light to drain, move along to a transom mounted light. The frequent removal and installation will cause the harness to fail. Some of these boat plug light manufactures will suggest installing a new garboard just for the light, so it does not have to be removed. If you are going to drill a hole, get a better light (a pair) and go with a surface mount transom LED.
