The Power Squadron did a safety inspection for us this weekend. We passed but he said we need a Garbage Disposal/Management plan posted.

How did you fulfill this requirement? What text/words did you use and where did you post it?

You ought to be able to pick one up at West Marine or your local chandlery. I have one posted on the inside of the cabinet door below the galley sing, and another on the underside of the step which covers the trash can.
 
I thought you only need a written garbage plan for a boat over 40 ft. Do you mean the standard garbage placard?
 
I am not sure. He said we have to have one on our boat. he blurted out a sample sentence of what it should state, which I did not write down, wish I had now.
 
According to Federal Regulations:

1. United states vessels of 26 feet or longer must display in a prominent location, a durable placard at least 4 by 9 inches notifying the crew and passengers of the discharge restrictions.

2. United states oceangoing vessels of 40 feet or longer, which engage in commerce or are equipped with a galley and berthing must have a written waste management Plan describing the procedures for collection, processing, storage and discharging garbage, and designate the person who is in charge of carrying out the plan.

You only need the trash placard. I am a VSC examiner for USPS. Pm me your address and I will mail you a placard. Our examiners in our squadron carry extras to help people pass the vsc when needed.

I'm surprised they didn't give you a Placard for free, when I took my safety course with the USCG Aux they had them free to pass out for boats larger then 26'
 
We ran into a gray area with my coast guard inspection on Saturday.

I'm a 240, but 26.7 in actual length. The question was the oil discharge placard in the engine room (hatch).

My registration is for a 24 foot based upon the 240 designation, but the coast aux. suggested I get the placard in case someone is crotchety.

Next trip to west marine I guess.
 
the LOA on a 240Sundeck is 24' not 26' I know there is a 2 foot swim platform but the LOA is from bow to stern and does not include the swimplatform. If you have someone tell you different and that you have to have that placard I'd tell them they need to go back to coast guard training school and get a clue.
 
Hey Guys,

I wanted to pass my USPS vessel safety check with flying colors. I could not find my garbage disposal sticker on the new to me boat. As such, this weekend I went to WM and purchased the stickers. Of course they are all sold in a kit of all 3.

I don't need the oil placard or waste management plan. If anyone needs either, just PM me and I will mail them to the 1st interested CSR members.

PS, Yea, the USPS examiner had free ones to offer as well. Lost 1.5 gallons of fuel over wanting to pass with flying colors. Live and learn.

can i just print out the placard from the link on the CG's site listed above and affix it inside the galley door?
 
greg - at 35'10 LOA, you dont need a trash plan. just the placard. ed needs one but i am not familiar with where to find a boiler-plate plan that you could just plug names into.
 
This is the one I have. It is laminated and velcro holds it to the inside of the trash door.

Motor Vessel “Four Suns”​


General: The Captain/Owner is responsible for performing or overseeing this TDP. In general, all trash shall be collected and stored onboard in plastic bags or other suitable containers. Upon returning to port, such trash shall be removed and placed in appropriate trash containers ashore. No trash or other substances may be discharged or put overboard except as in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Beer: Unprocessed beer shall be stored at a temperature of 34 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Before disposal, beer must be processed through human kidneys and deposited in an approved Type I, II or III marine sanitation device (MSD). If more than three nautical miles offshore, processed beer may be discharged directly overboard, provided that the processing person is wearing an approved PFD and standing or squatting on the swim platform.

Bird Droppings: Fresh bird droppings shall be allowed to dry on the vessel’s canvas and/or gelcoat. After drying, the bird dropping shall be disposed of by the CTO ( “Chief Trash Officer” ) by flicking it into the water with his or her middle finger. Remaining stains may be cleaned with fresh water, or, if more than 3 miles offshore, soap and water.

Seasickness discharge (barf): Within three nautical miles from shore, seasickness discharge shall be deposited into an approved MSD. From three to twelve nm offshore, seasickness discharge may be deposited directly into the ocean, provided that no chunks thereof exceed one square inch.
 
Gary, Have you ever had a inspection? If so, what did they say when they read your card?

Surprised you don’t have instructions regarding flushing dental floss and feminine care items.

Oh, and you don’t use your two favorite words at all,……"Duck," and "Valves."

Why? What's wrong with the plan? Is there something not covered for a TDP? I'll put it in there if I'm missing something. I've been boarded...

Seriously, I don't think anyone get's past the title and first sentence as no one has said anything.... ever... didn't even crack a smile. I enjoy it though and that's all that matters.
