ST. PETERSBURG - The channel under Johns Pass Bridge will be closed to boat traffic from 11 p.m. Sunday to 8 a.m. Monday as construction crews continue work to replace the aging drawbridge between Madeira Beach and Treasure Island.
From 8 a.m. Monday to 11 a.m. Tuesday, only boats that do not require a bridge opening will be permitted to travel under the bridge while state transportation contractors work on the new southbound deck. There also will be intermittent full channel closures, said Florida Department of Transportation spokeswoman Kris Carson.
There will be a single-lane closure on the bridge from 11 a.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Monday. Motorists will be able to travel over the bridge using one lane and will be directed by a construction crew worker.
The bridge project, which began in 2006, will provide wider travel lanes in both directions. The twin-span drawbridges also will be higher, reducing the number of bridge openings and closings.
The $76.9 million project is to be completed in early 2010.
