This is my first post hope I did it correctly.
I am looking at purchasing either a 2000 510 sundancer with 3196 cats or a 2000 410 sundancer with 6cta cummings.

It apears the fuel usage for a 510 is 25/30gph total at 1600rpm cruse (23knots?) and the 410 is only 5 gph less, it seems like a small amount of difference for a big diffrnce in Boat.

So the main question is, does the 510 cruse at 23 knots using 25gph? If so it is more fuel efficient than a 410.

3196?
I know some here have them and like them but.....
Be careful, they have a history and some buyers wont touch them.
Just thinking of resale.
Keep in mind I have a impossible to sell big gas boat.
It would have to be a great deal.
Cheers,

I think is a little off.

There has to be a pretty large price difference in the boats, why only considering these?

A side note, they never made a 410 Sundancer with 6CTA Cummins. An express yes but that boat has straight drives, bunk stateroom and the absence of a second head.

AON - Quick question. How do you like the 400EC? Pros/Cons? I only ask b/c I have a 1996 400EC. Just bought it in Oct 2010.
Thanks,

the fuel usage on the 510 seems low as does the rpm's for the cruising speed. If I'm not mistaken, the 3196 has a cruising RPM of around 1850 or so.

Here is a post by Frank Webster back in 2008 regarding the 3196 in a 510......

You will get the following fuel burn numbers...per engine, no generator running:

2300rpm = 33.1 gph (WOT)
2200=28.0
2100=23.9
2000=20.5
1900=17.3
1800=15.0
1600=10.8
1500=9.3
1400=7.5
1200=5.3

I have to agree that your finding of 410DA with Cummins is a strange one. Here's what I see in the specs for the 2003 410DA:

S T A N D A R D P R O P U L S I O N

T-VD-8.1 S Horizon MerCruiser
®

Gasoline V-Drives

(T-370 hp - 276 kW)

O P T I O N A L P R O P U L S I O N
Twin Diesel V-Drives:
T-VD-CAT3126TA Caterpillar

®

(T-340 hp - 254 kW)

(SmartCraft Systems N/A on Diesel Engine Applications.)

We have good number of 410DA owners on this site and from what I recall they have CATs 3116s or 3126s, very rarely you'll see Gas engines. I have never heard anyone having this boat with Cummins.

Two things for you here.
1. Cummins 6CTA 430hp are available in the 410 Express. Most folks are probably thinking Sundancer. They are all cat power.
2. I capatin a 2000 510 SunDancer. I can tell you it does burn about 22gph per engine @ 1950 rpm cruising about 25 knots. This one was repowered with C 12's But do a thorough sea trial before you buy it. The 3196 issues are only one problem. The raised deck design makes for terrible visibility. I can't stress enough it is really horrible. I'm not a small guy by any means but I find myself standing a lot in order to see over the bow. The ride also leaves a lot to be desired for an almost 40,000 boat.

I wnt from a 410 DA to a 510, just as you are looking at. At 25 knots, I burn about 30 dal per hour per engine. Great boat, love it.
