This will be my first time winterizing my boat and am looking for some feedback.

To fog my engine (4.3L EFI), the manual states to "shut off the fuel" to the engine and add 2 oz oil to the water seperator. Run the engine till it stops.

I have found a valve between the fuel tank and the water seperator. The name on it is Parker Skinner Valve Div. There is a knob on the valve that says On/Off. I thought that if I turn the valve to the off position this would stop the flow of fuel to the engine. I called the company and found out that the valve does not work that way. This is just a way to allow the valve to work should you loose your 12 VDC to the valve.

It looks to me that the only way to disable this valve and stop the fuel from flowing is to remove the 12 VDC going to the valve.

Has anyone stopped the flow of fuel this way? Have another method?

Thanks,

Glenn

glenn, this was a hot topic over at the now defunct SRO boards. it also came up here...

it seems to me that the only way moisture could enter a fuel injected system is through the exhausts. you have no carb to allow moisture in. i didnt fog my crownline MPI in the two winters i owned her. i didnt even fog this boat until this year. but i always stuff the exhaust with old t-shirts wrapped in a plastic bag and have not had any problems.

as for your question about shutting the fuel off, sorry but i cant help you

I would not feel comfortable if I did not fog the engine. I will keep looking for an answer. It has got to be out there somewhere.

fogging

It could be the 2oz of oil is what causes your engine to stop. When it does, you turn off the fuel switch. I've heard of Crusaders experiencing fuel pump failures because of being run dry. Not sure you want to do this with a merc, but if it says to run the fuel out in the manual that should be the gospel. The oil in the water sep is suppose to oil the cylinders. Crusader suggests squirting oil in through the spark plug holes. None of us fog in Michigan if stored in heated buildings. I stopped doing this years ago and have not had any problems. When I did fog my mercs, I did it with 20 weight oil through the carbs until the exhaust smoked or with fogging oil in an aeresol spray. I would shut down engines when they smoked. SBW

Glen,

I take no responsibility for this being correct as I really have no idea what I am talking about, actually I have never been on a boat before (disclaimer out of the way). However you said you are looking for fuel shutoff...I looked at your parts manual and there are two parts labeled fuel shut off. May not hurt to take a peak. Maybe others can chime in and tell you how crazy I am.

Look at page 54 and 55 of 66; Look at part 5 and 10. Hope this helps some.

Yesterday I winterized the engines and to stop the flow of gas, I took off one of the wires that went to the Skinner Valves you pointed out in the parts list. I added oil to the fuel water seperator and within 1-2 minutes the engine stopped. One thing I did not see was smoke. When I winterized my old carbureted motor, you would see smoke. I can only hope next spring everthing will be OK.

Thanks for the reply.

Glenn
