Fuel Prices!

Here we go again, if W E must reduce demand then howcome the NUMBER ONE EXPORT OF THE UNITED STATES IS O I L. I must be a few hotdogs shy of a picnic.

I will buy the stuff and pour it on the ground and let the other bastards cut THEIR demand. Don't threaten me with shortages and supply and demand issues if our nation has enough product to ship it out regardless of how common ordinary families are hurting. There is something really wrong with this nation and the Dept of Energy.

I would agree, but I will be sitting at the dock most of the summer, just warming up the engines once in a while. It gets to the point where you simply can't afford it anymore.

Yea we all like to talk big and act like we will not conserve, but the bottom line is there are very few of us who can do this and still eat. That favorite little shaded cove a mile from the marina and launch ramp will have many good books read in it this summer!!

It still makes me angry when I watch the news and they talk about our thirst and waste of gasoline yet it the tankers pull up to our harbors and fill up for overseas markets. Man something is very wrong here. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Obama is re-elected because all the things that were in place during 08 are still in place. Brian Williams of NBC evening news is almost nauseating to me anymore. The networks give Obama such favorable coverage and create doubt and poke fun at all the Rep. candidates. I'm afraid we have now lost control of common sense.

From what I've read the majority of these exports are petroleum products, the largest share being diesel. Why can't these products be shipped to overseas markets? I mean we're not running out here, everyone is getting as much as they want aren't they.

Interesting quote from this article:

WASHINGTON -- U.S. demand for oil and refined products -- including gasoline -- is down sharply from last year, so much that United States has actually become a net exporter of gasoline, unable to consume all that it makes.

Yet oil and gasoline prices are surging.
On Tuesday, oil rose past $105 a barrel and gasoline averaged $3.57 a gallon -- thanks again in no small part to rampant financial speculation on top of fears of supply disruptions.

Don't forget Obama put our oil, and I stress our oil, on the open market. The oil he opened up was and is supposed to be used for our use and to keep the prices down over here.

Opened up "our oil"? Yes, the President should exert more control over the national oil companies.

Oh wait. . . the government does not OWN the oil companies. How many of those oil compainies are even based in the U.S.? And if they are based in the U.S.. . .how much of their stock is owned by overseas interests? . . but I digress. . . .

So, if the government grants drilling leasing rights for governement owned land. (I presume that is what you are talking about). . . .why can't they ship the oil anywhere they darn well please?

And while we are at it: Are you blaming Obama for something here? I thought Obama's opponents are always ALWAYS complaining about how slow he moves on these matters?

And let's not confuse OIL with REFINED PRODUCTS. From the last several posts, we are simultaneously complaining that (1) We don't have enough refining capacity AND (2) production from those refineries is shipped outside the U.S. Get your stories straight people?

That was true with the Alaska pipeline for the first 25 years. It supplied 25% of our nation's oil. It was illegal to sell it overseas. NOT NOW! Senator Stevens(R) removed that requirement and now most of Alaska crude is sent overseas as it brings more $$$$.

Tom, Don't you guys up there get some free money from that pipeline. ??.

Well it's not free we have to pay federal tax on it. It is call the Permanent Fund or PFD. Alaska state government is funded mostly through taxes on the pipeline and selling of drilling leases. A small portion of this tax is invested in the PFD by state law and the "free money" is each Alaskan's share of the "profit" of that fund. So it can be as low as $0 or as high as $2200 (Highest so far) for each Alaskan resident. Meaning if you are a family of 4, it could be a good amount.

Because of this Alaska residency requirement are a little tougher than the L48. You have to live in Alaska for at least 1 year to gain residency and two-years to qualify for the PFD. The state also aggressively prosecutes those who try and cheat. Because I am out of the state for more than 180-days, I do not qualify to receive the fund.

BTW, Alaska has $11 Billion in reserves, so we are not in an econmic crisis as many states are. The higher the price of oil is, the more the state makes in taxes, yet Alaska has the highest fuel prices in the nation.

'Most' the oil was never shipped overseas and now none of it is. To know this is a real stress reliever.
Export of oil transported in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System was banned until 1996. Between 1996 and 2004, a total of about 95.49 million barrels of crude oil, equal to 2.7% of Alaskan production during that period, was exported to foreign countries. As of May 2011, no Alaskan oil has been exported since 2004.

South Korea 46.15
Japan 24.51
China 16.52
Taiwan 8.31

Total Alaskan Production

Based on what you have here Woody, I stand corrected. Thank you.

I still believe the ban needs to put back in place, especially with the Alaska governor and some in Congress wanting to increase the flow in the pipeline. Shell is trying, but when the feds approve the latest permit, the environmental waco terrorist keeps filing lawsuits, thus delaying, again, any progress.

Over $4.00 per gallon now at the cheap stations for regular gas and it seems to go up every day! I'm more worried about my daily car fuel than the boat fuel right now.
