fuel flow system, what do you have.

Here's a different viewpoint.

while fuel burn curves, engine feel, sound and a calculator work well, real time data can show a difference where perhaps you can gain efficiency and or speed.

Or ideally, BOTH !

Been running FLOSCAN for 10 years.

Helps me to plan better when running locally as I'm not hauling around a lot of extra fuel = extra weight

At 7.1 pounds per gallon 200 gallons of diesel equates to an extra 1,420 lbs of weight you're hauling around.

Even 100 lbs at 710 makes a difference.

Last year I moved up to VEEM props, and after they were dialed in we picked up an additional 1.5 kts at the same fuel burn.

I've owned this boat for just over 20 years now www.trojanboat.com and would seriously consider adding another FLOSCAN to the 450 DA I am seeking.

The boat currently under consideration is still running the factory tachs.

The FLOSCAN heads provide:
  • digital tach RPM data (which verified as 100% accurate with my strobe)
  • gallons burned per engine
  • instant NMPG from GPS SOG data.

This will be my LAST BOAT (gee, I said THAT 20 years ago) so I really have no worries making that investment in her.

Doing the GREAT LOOP?

Oh my what a valuable tool this will be.

If I was to share my current burn rates you'd likely not believe me, and at displacement speeds, you'd likely call me a liar.

So, just an input from someone who has been using the FLOWSCAN for some time and will likely add it back in instead of replacing the tachs with Aetna.

BEST !

Both Floscan and Maretron are doing the exact same thing, counting pulses from the fuel flow meters, and would likely be very close in accuracy. The issue to me would be the NEMA2000 part of the system and how well it integrates to your current system (Raymarine), and install simplicity.

To me it seems like the Maretron is a simpler install, requiring 2 flow sensors and a FFM100 per engine. According to them, less hardware, like straighteners and dampers. I've only done a cursory investigation, but I do like my maretron equipment.

I also have the TML100 in my tanks and at $200 each, worth every penny. If going the Maretron route, its a great addition to you fuel burn #'s.

My Raymarine fuel page...data coming from the TLM100's over the N2K network.

I have to agree that the version of FloScan you are referencing does do a great job of being a tach and displaying fuel flow. But the OP first referenced Maretron which implies NMEA2000 and that changes the game a bit. That is way more expensive to add with either FloScan or Maretron.

FWIW, my current FLOSCAN is NEMA 0183

edit: Current FLOSCAN is circa 2008-2009 it is old school NMEA 0183 -

Would certainly do NMEA 2000 on a new installation :)

If I were spending the $$$ for a new fuel flow system, I'd want N2K. Fewer and fewer things support 0183, and its really outdated. 0183 works fine, but on a new system?

Yep - NMEA 0183 doesn't support any engine data parameters
