Anyone have this. I'm thinking it works by programming in total fuel on board and then keeps track of amount of fuel being used, amount left to destination, and other functions. Thanks

Depends on boat/engine. My 260 with Merc 350 MAG MPI came with Smartcraft (as do most if not all current Merc engines). I have the Smartcraft tach display with has a small LCD, which among other things displays fuel flow. I also have it tied into my Northstar GPS, which offers various fuel flow related readings (based on the data from Smartcraft and the input of the tank size).

There are other more sophisticated options, and there are also non-Smartcraft related fuel flows. You put a flow meter in the fuel line and it sends the data to a display. Lowrance, Northstar/Navman and others make stand-alone fuel flow meters.

What boat/engine and year do you have?

I've got a pair of Lowrance EP-10 fuel flow sensors displayed on their LMF-200 digital gauge. I also have the network tied into a Raymarine E-80 chart plotter. But I've found it's better to leave the stuff shown on the Lowrance gauge instead of trying to clutter up the E-80.

So regardless of which system you get you'd probably be better off with a separate display for it. That way you can watch the fuel consumption rates just like tach, temp and pressures.
