Sorry if this is covered somewhere. I have searched but can't find it.
I have spin on fuel water separators on the bulkhead forward of the motors. Are these supposed to just spin off like an oil filter or do I need to loosen the nut on the top of the housing first? I put a filter wrench on it but it didn't budge. Didn't push too hard in case I was doing something wrong.
And I've heard there is an inline filter at the carb. There is a smaller flare nut the backs up to a larger nut. What is the proper technique for cracking these open? Where does the filter sit? I bought a set of flare nut wrenches to protect the brass nut.
Is there a good service manual for these engines, that's actually specific to this boat?
Thanks again for all of your help!

I had one of those boats years ago and I seem to remember there was a nut on the bottom of the filter. See if that's the case.

Oh.... depending on the carb you have the inline filter is usually in the carb body. Check where the fuel line attaches to the carb. If there appears to be a big brass nut on the carb where the fuel line connects, that's where the filter resides.

I believe the filters on the bulkhead are probably fram water seperators with replaceable filter elements. There should be a bolthead on the top/center. Securely hold the bottom can portion of unit with one hand while loosening the bolt on top. It is threaded into a pipe in the center of the can/bottom. hold can up tight against housing while removing bolt to minimize spillage. carb filter is in carb behind the large nut . using two wrenches first remove the fuel flare nut from the filter housing then remove the housing from the carb.

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like what I needed.

Just FYI, your directions were correct. Swapped out canister filters. Easy job. Removed the filter at the carb. I bought a cheap set of flare nut wrenches at Harbor Freight which made this pretty painless too. the guy at Napa said they didn't sell a replacement filter and that most people just clean that one out. Filter seemed to be made out of something synthetic. Wasn't paper but also wasn't metal. Cleaned it with carb cleaner. Fired right up but haven't had a chance to get the boat back on the water.
