I have twin Merc 5.7 liter engines. I was having my mechanic go through and give them their annual check up. I'm fairly new to the boating and there is a lot I don't know. He suggested I use fuel conditioner everytime I fill it up because the marina gas isn't great. Is this something you all agree on? And what do you use? I was thinking ok I'll add a can of Seafoam (something I use on my classic car when I think it needs it). Then Im thinking 1 can is good for 20 gallons...I will need 4 cans per tank each time. Is there a more concentrated conditioner?? = More cost effective. I'd like to say on average I use my boat 5 hrs/month run time, some months more some less so it can sit unused. Thanks for your input.

I use the Stabil marine as needed for the amount of fuel being put in. I also use a multi fuel conditioner in the tow rig and the boat about every third or so fill up. And the ethanol additive if using pump fuel. I also make sure the tank is full at the end of the season with Stabil and a octane booster for over the winter months if I remember. One can normally treats a 35 to 40 gallon tank but that is all that is needed to help out. I have non ethanol fuel around me so I try to keep the pump fuel out of the tanks. The runabout gets pump fuel quite a bit and won't be getting any when the state switches over to E20.

Where do you boat? Our marina gas is already treated and has no ethanol. Filling station gas is mostly e10 or higher which is a poor choice. Under these conditions additive are not required.

I should have added that I might be using alot this month and not at all for the next few. So with random outings, I always plan for sitting.

Non-ethanol like The Captain. Add Stabil before winter storage. Nothing else.
Fortunately I have a carburetor, which will run on anything including high octane piss.

Had a 5.7 in our 2006 260DA that we had for 3-4 years. Started using Seafoam as you indicate above with good results. We trailered the boat and ethanol free gas is very rare. Ran the cheapest gas on the road. Never had an issue. With an 85-gal tank, Seafoam was expensive. Changed to Startron at the advice of Lazy Daze, much cheaper and never an issue. Double dosed it for the winter with tank full and again, never an issue. We will downsize at some point and I will go back to Starton when we go back to gas. Just my experience…
