Marine Society of City of NY had sponsored an inter-academy MONOMOY race this weekend. traditionally between Ft Schuyler and Kings Point, we extended it to include MASS Maritime , Maine Maritime and USCG academy cadets. just so happens that Ft Schuyler has brand new waterfront facilities , wave attenuating floating dock , new ramps / pedestals , the whole 9 yards. they offer transient dockage , so I figured I would take advantage being a graduate and marine society member taking part in running the event. arrived Friday night late due to unforeseen closure of spuytan duyvl rail bridge which is the entrance to the harlem river. coming down from Haverstraw ny, it would have been a nice shortcut , but I ended up having to go around the "horn " of manhatten. anyhow , was a great "homecoming" by boat and as always fantastic nautical backdrop. I would recommend staying for anybody passing through the sound on the way to points south , or for any mariner interested in exploring the great campus and one of the best maritime museums around. you can wander the museum in the fort after dark and take all the time you want.

Wow, very nice. Did they have 50/250 service on the pedestals? Who coordinates the dockage? Might be a good trip for alumni weekend.

waterfront director is Rob Crafa. he gave me this link for the dockage request. his email contact should be on the college website, he is very good about getting back with answers.

I should have looked on the other side of the pedestal , I assume it had a 50a , I used the 30a side. water connections also there.
far cry from when I was there in early 90s! they removed all those boulders out of the basin there as well.

I graduated KP, so it was nice to see the pictures you posted... I also drilled in the Naval Reserve Center at Fort Schuyler... Did you have any trouble with Hell's gate?

the mids did really well , the first race was the traditional KP vs Schuyler mugs and plebes. was very very close , but Maritime won. then came a round robin with the other schools and oarsmen from different classes. Maine won the tiebreaker against Schuyler in the end. they had reason to celebrate at the pub outside the gate that night.
as far as hell gate, I lucked out and caught it with fair tide both ways. I picked up another 2.5 knots over the ground through the east river to lower manhatten !. I think the pucker factor there happens if you are on a sailboat trying to motor through at the wrong time. a planing boat has no issue.

Hell Gate is no problem under normal circumstances in a powerboat. Mere child’s play compared to an inlet in sloppy conditions. Especially a shallow one.

+ one on the inlet.... entered wachapreage inlet on delamrva back when I was bringing my trawler up from fla. dusk- mist / unmarked wild inlet / breaking waves fomr storm system / flat transom slow 42 boat. - king Neptune was looking over me that evening to say the least !
