Hi guys, I am at present seriously looking over a 1989 390 EC. Boat is not bad, & I will get a survey if I decide to buy. But what seems a little off, is that the front windshield has 3 panels of glass, while all of the other boats I have looked at have only two panels of glass in windshield ? My 36’ express 1980, has the 3 panel windshield. Can somebody straighten me out, is the 2 panel glass standard configuration, and where does a 3 glass come into the picture ?

Could it be a mistake in the ad? Looking at the SR archives, when the boat was redesigned in '92 and became the 40EC, a 3-piece front windshield was used. The deck shape, below the windshield, is shaped different to accommodate the different shape of the windshield "bow"... so maybe you tell that way if it's a modification or a mistake in the ad. What's the HIN?

The HIN on transom is F7501H687. It’s possible it could beF760..... Also, I have mistakenly said it’s an 1989 whereas it’s a 1987. It’s listed as a 390 EC Sea Ray. Number was hard to read. Thanks for the feed back guys.

OK, so definitely an '87 based on the HIN. Do you have a link to the ad? I may be able to check the HIN later today. Although... doesn't the 340 EC have a 3-piece windshield?

Lazy Daze, sorry, no add any longer. Boat is now sitting on the hard. Owner ill, boat being sold by family. It needs some TLC and everything seems to be there. But I can’t seem to find the sea ray plate that’s supposed to be inside with the info on it. Short of measuring it, it seems just the same as a few other 39’ I have looked at. Maybe it’s a 37’ or 40’ ? At this point it’s an 1- 1/2 hr drive back up north to look at her again, and I’d like to have all the info I can gather before I go back next time. (The cabin roof is moulded to accept the three pc windshield in a kind of depression) I tried to get through to sea ray, but no success. Thought they could tell me what model it is. I know that the H in hull number means it was made in Merrit Island shop. Thanks for now.

I owned a 390 for 10 years, saw quite a few in that time and all had the same 2 glass windshield, though I could always be mistaken. The 34 from same era had 3 glass windshield.

What side was the transom door on?? that can narrow it down.

H687

That H means she was constructed in August. (8th month of the year = 8th letter of the alphabet)

6 is for 1986. 87 is model-year 1987.

Could it be a lot bigger than a 390? The 460EC was produced in that era, and from a distance could be confused with a 390. The biggest distinguishing detail is a stepped sheer/rail right below the arch. Does that sound familiar?

Sublimetime, transom door is on starboard (R/H) side.

RollerCoastr, thanks much for the HIN info. One website told me the boat was manufactured at Merrit Island. By golly, amazing the things we can get into while trying to check out older boats. Thanks.

RollerCoastr, no it’s definitely not the 46 (but would love one). I’m kind of leaning toward a 38’ o 40’. Don’t know if the year would match either. But Down below almost identical to any 36’ or 40’. Think I am going to have to go up again this weekend and see if any of the family members can shed some light on this. Thanks guys.

Ok, that was a long-shot, because the 460EC is more likely to pass for a 50 than a 36...

I hate being stumped, but I'm afraid I am!

Well guys, it was a good discussion, a good shot at finding out what she is. I guess a lot can happen over the last 31 years. Let you know what I come up with in the next month. Certainly won't make an offer blind. Thanks Everyone. GeorgeR

I checked on that HIN - both with a 5 and a 6 - nothing matched up. Can you get me one of the engine serial numbers? But it sure sounds like it's a 340, not a 390.

Good point. I guess we'll have to be patient and wait for more info :)

Hey guys, I didn’t realize that I would be opening up a can of worms here. When I wrote down the HIN #, I wrote down what I saw. The letters are a little worn down by now over the years,but they looked like this to me;

F750 1H687...now I said the 5 could be a 6, could the 1 be I ?
>
F760 IH687. ......And what if; 7 was a 1 ?
>
F150 IH687

The space in the line of numbers is same as on the fibreglass hull. Boy, after all of this info coming in I don’t know what to think, but I certainly need to talk to P.O. family. Thanks much all you guys for your expertise.
