This is on a new to me 05 280.( As a disclaimer i've had diesels for the past 25 years so trying to learn about the boat)

In the picture below is this a primary fuel filter and if so how often do you change it compared to the fuel filter mounted on the engine.

Seeing that I owned 1 of them...I'd say it was a non OEM item

what I'm saying is that thing should not be there. Fuel line goes from the tank to the fuel solenoids then to the CF3

Ive got those filters on my 2004 340 w/ 8.1's. I changed them last summer, not sure how often they need changing. I guess it depends on what you put in the gas tanks.

Does this boat have an after market fuel consumption meter? I have seen additional fuel filters added when fuel meters are added because the fuel meter is tied in after a filter. Don’t know if that helps or applies.

Those filters are cheap, change it every year.

This looks like the Mercury OEM in line filter they put on many of their V8s. Merc part number 35-864572A1 “In Line Filter Kit.” I put one of these on my 5.0 when I added a fuel flow monitor. I spoke with the tech dept at Merc and they recommended it. I change the element every year.

You know you can go to an auto parts store and get that filter for $10 to $15, It's a standard fuel filter.

I don't have the part # for that filter but matched other ones up on the boats and harleys. Auto plus is where I get my matched up they even had a motorcycle/boat catalog for those parts.

We gave up using Marine Max for any service a long time ago and haven’t looked back. Not only did we frequently get the boat back filthy but usually we would find something else broken from the service work they performed. Nobody there cared about their work.
We now use an independent mechanic who we couldn’t be happier with.
