For those who took it what was the average Days you put down per month? I’m averaging around 13 during the summer months. But I was also told I could include days on my PWC. I have plenty of time, I’m just curious what the average boater does. Thanks

Enough to meet the requirement. Seriously, it’s kind of an IQ test. I didn’t keep a log so not much else I could do. I may still have my sheet. If so I’ll pm it to you.

Im curious about the captains course you guys are talking about I looked in to taking it, not because i plan to operate a commercial boat but just for the knowledge. I plan on doing the loop in about 5 years. From the info i found on the website it states you need to log hours on a commercial vessel working with a captain. This is not an option for me. Are you guys talking about something different using recreational hours or is there a different type of captains course? I am not interested in a boating safety course. I took that in NJ when it became manditory

Time at sea is time at sea. It does not need to be commercial to count towards your captains license...

Thanks guys. Just passed all my tests along with my Masters. Getting Towing endorsement next week. As for the Waverunner. Coast guard doesn't really like to use those days I was told. A also cant find any info on the 2 boats I owned when I was in my 20's Really stinks, Because It may change my License.

The process to upgrade your tonnage is pretty simple from what I understand. Get your 25T with the 340 and upgrade next year. No more testing, just a fee...

A related question to those who have gotten their Captains license - Did it matter to your insurance company? Any impact?

Zero impact with Chubb since already had a discount for something like 30+ years experience.

Yea I was told to leave out the Tonnage. Let the Coast Guard determine. Sometimes they will give a 50. I can't see it since I am giving them my document with the tonnage on it. I am going to ask the owner of the school again before send it all in. How would I upgrade without being on a larger Vessel? I guess I'll have to find some richer friends then me..LOL

These days, it seems that insurance is only interested in what you have owned and run, not a license. Lost 2 good buyers on a 460 Dancer because they didn't qualify for insurance without a full time captain for at least a year. Finally an Egg Harbor guy got the prize. He's gonna be one happy camper.

Did most of you take an online course or an in person one? I would prefer an in person one but the availability of classes isn’t agreeing with my schedule. Any thoughts on online testing?

In person for me. I personally don’t think I would have passed if I did it online. That’s just me personally. May be different for others.

In person. Annapolis School of Seamanship. I thought they did a good job...

14 years ago I bought a DVD and notebook course. For me it was a joke, I got into a classroom and nailed it.

In person and I would push anyone to follow the in classroom if available

In person, Sea School, got a discount for purchasing at the boat show. 2 3-day weekends for OUPV, 1 more 3-day weekend for master. In class dialog was great.

When recently renewing my 25T master captain's license I got 5-years ago with my 36' Cruisers yachts, I upgraded to a 50T with the time I have spent on my current DA. No testing, just a physical and fees.
