Florida

Funny to fall into this thread... We are driving from the Seattle area right now.. currently in OK and heading to the west coast of FL to get a feel for the place and eventually (hope before next winter), rent someplace south of N Ft Myers so we have time to check out the area and then decide to settle in. We are sooo tired of the rainy winters. We enjoy sunshine and boating year round but find it harder to do up in the PNW. We love the PNW but also have no reason to stay up there. Kids are grown and gone but his family is currently in Jax and he is in Bahrain. No idea where he will eventually settle down so we decided to get close to our DIL family and possibly have our grandson closer...

thanks for all the info. We are also looking at the Myrtle Beach area... but will probably stick with the gulf side of FL...

Being from a family that has been in Florida for over 140 years, I can certainly appreciate the reasons why you northerners have moved here (or want to move here). I've lived all over the state (except for Miami - can't take the crowds in that area). Unfortunately, I remember what it was like when I was a kid (back in the 60's and 70's). As nice as you think it is now, the changes in our state's waters haven't been positive IMHO. There is so much more pollution, more red tides, crowded waters, smaller numbers of fish, etc. than there was then.
I just wish you could have experienced it like I did when I grew up...

I would rather boat in the red tide than haul my boat out for 5 months......It is a disease that boating thing.....

Hi wpath,
I certainly can agree with you on the changes here. I was fortunate to be able to move here in '92 and have seen the changes, I wish I could turn the clock back. I saw the changes on Long Island, (the eastern half), which was rural. When I left most of the farms were gone putting houses everywhere. The Hamptons were a nice place to fish and enjoy the beach, the Hollywood types discovered it and destroyed it, making it a circus.

rboothby, I always hate to be the "you should have been here then..." guy, but I remember boating as a child around Bradenton/Sarasota, and seeing huge schools of tarpon, water just as clear as gin, and walking for miles on beaches with almost no one on them. And the lakes were clean - no pea soup like I find so many times now.
Like I said, I don't blame people for wanting to move here, but I really wish more of them wanted to protect our natural resources. I get discouraged when I hear people complain about having to pay slightly higher taxes for programs designed to improve water quality, or when our elected officials gut our environmental laws. There are so many things that are needed to get our state into shape, but so few people are willing to make any effort.
Well, off the soap box!!!:smt021
