Floating hardware store

We once met a very senior couple who had a 65 foot converted wood tug boat. I asked him what he carried for spare and he showed me his cell phone. We go to areas that it is difficult to get service. We carry any item that has ever broke on the boat and oil. If an item fails I buy 2 one for a spare one to put in.

Spare bilge pumps! I don't have any spares as there are 3 in the bilge and one in the cabin but I do keep a spare sump pump on the boat. I've bailed (pardon the pun) a few friends and myself out by having one available.

A quart of oil. Gallon of antifreeze. Spare belts. Two spare props. Spare keys. Basic hand tools like you need for home projects. If something needs attention and requires work, I hire a mechanic at one of many good marinas in locations where we travel. We really stay on top of preventive maintenance and have been fortunate to enjoy good reliability of systems. There is some value to having some common spares on board even if you don't do the work. You at least have the correct part on board. I was once delayed a few days waiting for a thermostat to be delivered to a small out of the way port. Should of had a spare.
