I wish to add a flag (US) to my 2001-340 Sundancer.
1.) Does anyone know the proper size?
2.) Stern mount- Above rear hatch?

Appreciate input from this forum

I believe I read the specifications for flag placements, types and sizes in the latest West Marine catalog. I will check tonight and if wasn't there, I will try to find where I came across this information.

Sorry, I was wrong . . . I must have read it in a recent Boating Magazine article. If so, I know I read it in the last 6 months and will look through those I still have.

I was wrong, it is in the latest catalog. Go to any West Marine store (or on-line) and request their complete catalog. They have specifications in the flag section on proper dimensions based on boat length.

I am curious about how you plan on mounting? I will looking into this soon for my 290.

The flags I have seen on Sea Rays at our Marina are mounted on the stern. Our folks use flag poles that mount on the grab handle of the Lazarette. These poles are available at boat supply places like West Marine.

Thanks, Dave! Out of all the things that were "thrown in" with the sale of my previous boat, one of the two things I miss the most is our flag.

Searay has a stainless steel flag pole($60) thats an option on their sport yachts
I think its 1" dia. you can get mount that screw in to your boat, thats what I did you can see it in sig picture.

For aesthetics, the length of the flag should match your boat length at 1 inch to 1 foot. So, for a 34' boat, I would suggest a 24"x36" flag, which is about as close as I think you can get.

As for mounting - stern.

I personally prefer the look of a teak flagpole but I have had a stainless one on past boats and never had a problem.

i've had to mount a flag pole on each of my three boats and i used this same technique each and every time.

Teak pole, embroidered yacht ensign (1" for each 1' of boat length - that's in chapmans). the pole socket is stainless and the angle depends upon the angle/slope of your transom or area just below the gunnel, and your taste. i currrently have a 1" diameter pole which slips into a 1" stainless bowrail socket. the angle created is probalby about 60 degrees off the transom and the socket is mounted by drilling three holes, siliconing the base and the holes and fastening with three correctly sized stainless screws. be sure to make the hole large enough to accomodate your screw or, as you screw in, you'll crack the gel coat. dont worry - it wont happen if you are careful!

hopefully the link works - for some reason, as of this writing, it is NOT! :smt009
