Anyone ever fished in Alaska?
I'm going with a friend who's Father-in-law has a cabin in Homer, AK and we're heading out the weekend after Father's day. I'm excited Halibut and Salmon "Deadliest Catch" style...just kidding but either way fish none the less.

Todd,
I have not, but my mother in law has. Did it for 20 years or so, I suppose. She also has a cabin in Homer, it has been in the family since the mid-50's, I suppose. I think you in for a great adventure! Now I remember they fished for 'reds', salmon, on the Kenai near Soldatna. My wifes uncle, Wesley Wickham, will be there in Homer when you get there. I think he will be there all summer, and is headed up in a couple of weeks. The cabin may be on Mansfield Lane or Road.

Bill Mansfield is who originally homesteaded the property they now have.

Hey Todd,

I've fished in AK, commercial (long-lining halibut) and sport.

I lived in Homer and had a cabin there in the sticks. It burned down about 3 years ago, but it hadn't been mine for over a decade.

Homer is a great place. Lots of fishing charter boats on the 'Spit'. It's also a nice artist community. It's worthwhile to go 'across the bay' to Seldovia, Poot Peak, and the glaciers.

Across Cook Inlet is a lodge that used to be owned by friends of mine (don't know now), Lake Illiamna Lodge. http://www.alaskaone.com/iliamna/rates.htm

The fly-in fishing is great. Fishing the Kenai River is also good. Flying over the glaciers is a treat.

The weather is generally the most sunny late May - early June. It's warmer later on, but also more cloudy. It never gets too warm. People take their shirts off when it hits 60 F. Of course, I've not been back in over a decade, so perhaps global warming has hit there, too, and you'll find it warmer.

If you have time, take a side trip to Denali National Park. 4th Street in Anchorage is interesting. Don't miss the museum there that chronicles the big earthquake in the early 60's.

Have a great time. Take warm clothes.

Feel free to ask me questions here or in a pm. The one caveat is that I've not been there in a while.

Are you willing to send some crabs to the east coast?

Just kidding, enjoy your trip, and know that some of us are envious...

Yep, but I was in the middle of Alaska in the White Mountain Range north of fairbanks -- pics in the other fishing thread.

No help, but know lots of folks that swear by it.

Ok, so not over teh father's day weekend as adertised(we had the dates wrong) but I'm a couple days away from leaving the desk and flying to the Alaskan Cook inlet to slay some halibut.
I leave 6AM Pacific time Thursday.
I hope I didn't jinx myself by buying a good size freezer over the last week to stuff full......

Wish me luck; I have two solid days of work left befor the 4 day trip but to me it's no different than leaving on the boat for the week, ( get the work done as soon as possible) and spend the real thinking time preparing to e...n...j...o...y and decompress.

Ok, I arrived in Anchorage about two hours ago. Beautiful Weather 74 degrees, sunny and little to no wind. We leave in a few hours to drive to my friends in-laws cabin in Ninilchik about 3 hours away.
We have been told that fishing is good, the Sockeye (Red) salmon has begun to come into the rivers and I am told it's nearly impossible NOT to catch one on the Russian River.
We primarlily came for the Halibut however and I am eager to snag one of them as well.

The scenery so far is simple town stuff, but flying in we saw the majestic mountains and glaciers that we'll be near soon.

Wish me Luck.....pictures to come

Good luck! go slay em Todd as I slave in this desolate, woman filled office , nary a window thru which to view...awww... 'cept the pictures to the world thru CSR

Yeah it's just a loader with the bucket removed and a hydraulic adjustable arm to pick you up and get you out there. It's impressive for sure

Todd, glad you had a great time and got your halibut. Did you get your "I went to Homer for the Hal-i-but" t-shirt?

The photos sure bring back memories. Thanks.

We actually did not go down to Homer. I wish we got a chance to but We stayed in Ninilchik where their cabin is.

Todd, I'm sure you're hooked and will go back. When you do, try to get down to Homer. It's a fun town in a great setting. When you come around the point and onto the highway overlook, it's one of the best views anywhere. Even better on a sunny day.

Yup. Kinda like that. But the senic turnout is farther to the right from where the webcam is, and gives a much higher and wider panorama. You get the spit as in the webcam shot, but also the entire Katchemak Bay and all the mountains & glaciers.
