Planning a late June trip for a few days. In the East Chicago, MI City area. Anyone recommend places to go or not to go? Any tips, cautions, etc?

I'd do Michigan City and New Buffalo (my #1 choice), before East Chicago. East Chicago lakefront is all industrial. Not much in the area. Michigan City is ok. New Buffalo is more quaint with a nice downtown within walking distance. Your other option is to head over to Chicago, which has all the bells and whistles of a big city.

Agree with @Golfman25 on EC. Hammond is largely the same, a nice marina with the Horseshoe Casino right there, but we would never venture outside the marina when we were slipped there.

Michigan City has the beach, lighthouse and great views. A few restaurants within walking distance and the zoo. NB has many restaurants and shops - all walkable.

We have a trip planned in late June, further north into Michigan.. but if we're around you're welcome to stop by for a drink.

Recommendations on where to slip in MI city or NB?

I’ve heard it’s still pretty cool on the lake in late June. Is that true? I don’t wanna be in long sleeves.

Depends on when in june. First weekend can still be cold. Last weekend the water has warmed up but may not be swimmable yet. Alot depends on wind direction. If the wind is out of the south or west, you will probably be good. If the wind runs down the lake, not only will you be cold but it may be too rough to go out. The south end of the lake is shallow and warms up quicker, even than up around Chicago.

@yobub is correct, winds plays a big role. It can be July even, nice and warm on shore, go out a few miles and it's chilly. But overall, good weather. MC I'd call Washington Park and get a slip reservation lined up. NB I would stay the municipal marina, you can book online with Michigan DNR.

NB municipal marina is right up front. They also have a couple of top tier hotels around the marina if you want to treat the admiral.

If you've got some extra time consider pushing a bit further north and hit South Haven. One of the coolest boater towns on the south of the lake, in my opinion.
