Twin 4.3l and 3.0l, all w/ AlphaI GenII drives
Well, after a couple of years at looking at boats, finally deciding on the 2002-up 280DA, and then taking an entire season to find one...we have! She's ours. We had her surveyed and sea trialed last weekend with fantastic results. She looks basically brand-new. Extremely well cared for, she was trailered her entire life, washed and rinsed after every outing and drives, generator and a/c flushed with fresh water every time.

She's a 2003 and has a generator, 4.3l twins with Alpha I drives, just turned over 200hrs during the sea trial, Garmin 3210 Chartplotter and radar, 3-axle trailer with surge disc brakes. Going from my Garmin LegendC with 2" screen to the 3210 10-1/2" screen will be something else!

We should have her in home waters within the next couple of weeks.

I know some of you probably thought we were all talk; I've laughed at how long we had been looking. We purchased our current and first Sea Ray 175 in '06 as a "test" to see if we'd like it. Bought it for nothing, brought it back from the dead and have been using it nearly every weekend. But we always had to be careful of the weather conditions as it wouldn't take much and we'd have nowhere to go.

So we first started "looking" at 220 and 240 Sundecks, then after determining that a cabin was a good idea (thanks to two growing girls (now 8 and 6) we thought the 215EC was a good idea. Then we moved on to the 240 Sundancer. Couple months later, the 250DA.

But wait, there are some 260's out there with generators. And yes, now my wife says a generator is a must-have-requirement! But wait, even more 270's have generators and they have a seperate dinette, perfect! So we actually did look at a couple for sale.

Then back in January 2010 we went to a boat show in Virginia Beach and walked onto a boat with a radar arch. Boy aren't those nice? Lots of head room and lighting from them. Plus, they look sweet. Looked at another 270 for sale in Annapolis, MD and sitting right next to it was a 280DA with arch and twins. Out of our league. Well....maybe not? Price differential was not that much and look how much more boat you get; generators are way more common, seperate dinette, radar arch and twin engines. Twins would be nice out on the Chesapeake, and for docking.

So here we are. The 3rd one we put an offer on since May and it's ours. And I'm glad the other ones we put offers on, or barely missed, didn't work out. This boat is the best of them all as far as care, maintenance, and equipment. I think we'll have a lot of fun with her in the remaining time we have this year. It will be a LONG winter, that's for sure!

And hey, I'm a two Sea Ray boat owner!

What a great post. Your story is a familiar one but you told it well. Sounds like you and your wife did your homework. The boat looks very nice except for the drives........they look brand new!

Congrats on the purchase. That is a pretty serious upgrade from the bowrider! (Don't forget to update your info.) Thanks again for a great post.

Congratulations, your new boat looks very nice :smt038 Good for you, enjoy  We are patiently looking also, so, we enjoyed your story.

Congratulations!! Nice find!! She looks new!
I hope you won’t get bored soon as there’s little to fix or modify on her!:grin::grin:

I’ll say, by the looks of those outdrives it does not look like she was ever in the water! Very clean looking boat, good luck with her.

Congrats!!! That is a great looking boat -- nice find. There are a lot of posts on here about people who will make every justification in the world to buy the first boat they see. You are proof that patience pays off.

Nice work!

Congrats!.....great looking boat. This is one of SRs best models. This one looks like new. Hope you will be able to get it in the water before winter hits.

Congratulations on a great looking 280!

Wow you were patient! And it looks like it paid off!

Enjoy! We have. While I love the hunt, I can't tell how liberating it is not to be in the market. This is our third season with our 280 and we really love this boat.

Gunn. Congrats. That's fantastic. I know you have been looking for some time. You will feel like you're driving a bus compared to what you have now, but you will get used to it. Enjoy.

Looks like a great boat. Enjoy it.

Congrats on your new boat! And when the Admiral decides you need more room in a year you'll be joining the 320 or 340 club!:smt043

Oh man, thanks all! We are very excited about. I took home the nice Sea Ray bag full of ducumentation and have gotten through everything except the Vacuflush head manual. :smt001 Downloaded the Garm 3210 manual and have read up on that and the use of the radar. I'm trying to take it all in. And I'm now on page 85 of the "Official 280 Sundancer Thread", whew.

But at the same time, I'm totally freaked out. As quoted above, this is a serious upgrade. From an 18', 7'6" beam, 2000lb boat to one that's 31', 9'6" beam and 8000lbs, yikes. When we sea-trialed it, it was the first time we had been on the water, on a 280DA. To put it simply, Wow. Totally different than our 175. The huge bow on that boat coming up and leveling off was just crazy wild. And the huge hole in the water left behind the boat as we cruised along was just crazy wild. I was thinking to myself, and I think I even said out-loud, "Now THIS is a boat". Very intimidating.

I have known this day would come someday. I've spent my entire 175 days practicing for when we upgraded. I've always tried to dock it without barely touching a piling and tried to put it where we wanted it without a bunch of hand-grabbing, knowing that a 8000lb. boat won't be able to be pushed around as easily as ours. I'm sure that'll help.

But it's still ridiculously scary!
