FINALLY found an 84' 255 AJ to buy!

It is built on a frame. It's getting pretty rickety but still holds up well once the seat bases are on it. The bases are very heavy. I have two main bases the middle is made up of a 12" wide divided that fits into the frame that hold some cup holders and a insert to convert it into a bench. You might be able to see what I am talking about from the pics in my profile.

I'll have to look at it when I get home, the base for this one is pretty big too, but I'll need legs to support the front edge of the bench seat. At the current size, it's very light, we're adding 8" for 24" total. I'm going to make the leg in the shop.

The positive to a smaller seat is engine room access. With mine I have to totally remove it to get to my ER. It's a PITA every time to go down there and there is no place to store it.

I agree, there are compromises to everything, I suppose. All I have to do is lift off the seat bottom to get into the engine room for simple things. But to install the engine I'm sitting here with in the shop, I'll have to remove the base. It comes out by removing 6 through bolt.

One other thing, until I got home and showed my wife the pictures, it hadn't occurred to me that the color of the material was lighter than I had selected. I went over there this morning and since they had to change the seat bottom anyway, they're going to change back to my original choice in vinyl. They thought I might like the lighter vinyl better, but I think the original colors with cleaner lines and only piping for the accent color will look nice. I like the look of a nice, original looking older boat. We'll see if I made a wise choice...another factor that led me to use the original colors is the brown dash. I'm going to freshen the paint up on the dash anyway, but I'd rather not do a color change there if possible.

Went to check on the boat today. They hadn't done one %&*!@%! thing as of this morning. They swear they're working 4 guys on it all weekend to have it ready for Monday. I told them that if I had known that it would just be SITTING THERE all week long I could have had it running and ready to go when they had it finished. I'm just pissed...Deep breath...okay, I feel better. Not much better, but better.

I know that feeling... I don't know how many times the shop put my launch back... I hope they get it finished for you.

Bummer dude.

I understand your frustration. Be the squeaky wheel and have it done for Sunday.

They just called me, they say they have 4 guys working on it right now and it's going to be the first boat out of the shop. Supposed to call me later to tell me if it'll be ready tomorrow or Monday. They did say that they wil not do a rush job, said they'd make it worth my wait...we'll see.

I am finding ANY recreational vehicle shop ....

1 works on THEIR own schedule
2 can't tell time
3 doesn't have to take responsibility for their mistakes
4 lie to the customer at every opportunity
5 try to appear as the Hero in any situation
6 make themselves alot busier than they really are

good luck Brother

Yeah, if I could do interior myself, I would. So for now I'm going to implement my plan B, raise 43LL until they get me done.

I thought it was just ATV shops... I think your right about "any recreational" shop... I am trying to figure out the math on my bill still from getting my boat in the water... 28 bilable hours? ugh...

It's a joke. 4 guys go out to launch your boat, two work the launch and two stand around...still don't see 28 billable hours. Did they overhaul the outdrive or something?

No call yesterday or today. I just left a message with the owner. Not much more to say...I WANT MY BOAT BACK!:smt089

Anyone wanna guess why I got no calls today either? I called 5 times today with no answer, I just decided to drive over there...the boat is in a million pieces. Excuse after excuse after excuse, I went ape$4!t. They said it will be done in the next two days, they showed me everything they're doing, but they lied about it being the next boat out and all that crap. She said the dealers come first and everything else is second! THAT would have been nice to know 4 weeks ago when I left the boat there. I told her I'd better be AMAZED at the way the boat look when I get it back...I threatened to take it today...it was a bad deal, she was flustered by me being so sick of the run around, I was obviously pissed. UGH! Will this crap ever end?!?!?!?

Man I am sorry that really has to stink specially when your spending so much money.

Yeah, I'll tell ya, I'm pretty easy going, but when someone says "I'll do XYZ", then that's what I expect. And I know that things happen, if they just picked up the phone to let me know what's going on... I'd be fine with this. This particular shop has a REALLY strong reputation and I've seen lots of examples of their work. It's top notch, I guess that's why I'm so disappointed with their lack of communication and inability to keep a schedule.

yeah getting your hopes up to be in the water, then the dissapointment in the shop is a double whammy. I had dealt with a little of that with the shop that had my 255 I finally got it in the water but it seem half the stuff they were suppose to go over never got looked at. I have my port side engine not running at the moment. My brother is comming over today to look at it in fact. I hope it is something simple. Owning a boat has not been so much fun so far.

Well, with owning an older boat especially, it's always something. But typically, once you get past the big things, it's just nit picky stuff. And I'm now convinced that there is no such thing as a good boat mechanic...I hear about them, but when I use them they end up being incompetent.
