After much looking and searching I put a deposit on an 84' 255 Amberjack today. I'm hoping to go get it in a month or two and get started with the process of a nice update/refit. I'm now looking for a GOOD trailer that'll carry this 6000 lb. cuddy safely from the lake to my shop, or from Atlanta to the Gulf.

This one has a 5.7/alpha so I'm expecting pretty slow numbers...but I'm land locked on a lake so whats the rush?!?!?

Congrats! It's a great boat.

But

Where are the pics?

I don't have any pics yet guys, I'll post plenty once I do get them.

Hey Big Island, so what kind of performance are you getting from your single 5.7?

I don't have fuel usage numbers. My top end is 30mph on gps (me alone 1/4 gas and an empty boat) at about 4500 rpm I can hold plane with tabs full down at about 12 or 13 mph. If I have a big group it is 50/50 whether or not I will get on plane. I usually don't go much above 2000 rpm as we usually aren't in much of a hurry. I redid my interior and teak the last couple of years. I think the pics are still in my album.

I thought about doing a full repower a couple of years ago like CageRattler did with his 255, but for my use i couldn't justify the cost.

We love the boat. I hope you enjoy yours

That's about what I was expecting, what rpms are you turning to be on plane with tabs? I like 3000 rpm as a cruise setting on the carbureted 5.7's. If she'll hold plane at 3k then I'll be happy. I'm going to start gathering repower components in anticipation of that phase. I'm thinking a B III and a 454 at least...I think going bigger than the 454 would get expensive fast though.

Yep a B3 aqnd a big block would have been my choice. There is a lot of space to roam in the engine bay for more power. Who knows maybe I get a wild hair an decide to drop $12g's into a boat to triple its current value I might.

I can hold plane at 300 rpm if I'm not too loaded. Usually without much tab at all. I am not sure what I have in prop size and pitch- I need to check it out in the spring. I do have the original Alpha 1 drive- although it is about to meet its maker due to some electrolysis issues at our dock last summer.

I had 92 chaparral 29 cruiser with twin alphas, I had the boat pulled to clean the hull and noticed the drives needed repainting, but I was in a hurry to get her back in the water..."what can one season hurt?". Holy cow! The drives were eaten so badly that I ended up having to replace them both! Lesson learned!

Also, I found a trailer that I'm interested in. It's an 06' Premier that originally had a Formula 260SS on it. It's tandem axle with disc brakes on both axles. The guy wants $2k for it and it does look like brand new. The only thing I don't like is the D load range tires. I'd prefer E load range tires...mainly because the boat will hang 8" over the fenders. I plan to store it in one of my shops in the winter and in a covered slip in the summer.

How big of a hassle are the wide load permits to get?

I'm flying up to PA to finalize the purchase on Feb. 7th...if she's all she appears to be it should be quick and easy. I hope there are no hidden surprises.

Done deal! She's officially mine. Let the work begin. Other than some serious elbow grease, I'm going to have a bench seat built all the way across the back of the cockpit. I'll post some pics this week.

Absolutely! I meant to take several pix today but we went through the boat thoroughly and negotiated so long I had to hurry to catch my flight home...kinda cool to post from 36,000 feet.
I've had a few boats but always wanted an AJ so I'm really excited about this boat!

Sweet!! Congrats on the new purchase. What part of PA is the boat in? I live in PA and just curious if I would have every ran across it in my travels.

It's in Philadelphia. What part of pa are you in?
