Fault Code on SMX air conditioner

Yes, it is normal. You can change the fan to go on and off with the AC, put it gets pretty stuffy on a hot day. I had my last boat for 7 years and the fan and AC were working just fine when I sold it, so I know it will last at least 7 years.

i believe you can program the fan to go OFF when the compressor goes off. you'd have to read the manual. but unless the noise bugs you i'd let it run. those fan motors will go forever.

It also keeps the cabin at a more even temp and keeps air moving past the temperature sensor for a more accurate reading.

Thanks guys. I think I'll just let the fan run as that's what it is designed for. I have enough other things to mess around with already.

We got the HI P5 error code on the SMX controls. I called Cruisair and they said it was low water flow. I opened the seastrainer and it was fine. I opened the seacock and got water flow out of the top of the strainer. I reassembled everything and turned the unit on. No error code and good water flow out of the side of the boat. Later that evening, I got the same error code with the water flowing good out of the side of the boat. We're in FL and it's 90 degrees and we really need the AC. Any suggestions? We have a 1997 370 EC with one AC unit. Bob

I've had that error a couple of times with the most recent about two weeks ago. Both times, a new relay switch solved the problem. There's a relay switch for each unit. The relay switches are cheap. A couple of weeks ago I ditched the bad one and replaced the others, keeping the old good ones for spares. If I recall, the parts were under $50 total, I think. What caused the problem to be intermittent is that if one unit is on and hasn't yet reached temp, the other unit would work since the bad relay didn't have to work. However, if the working units were at full temp, or not on at all, the bad unit relay would not work. Either way, if you haven't replaced them yet, give it a shot and you should be good for a while. Good luck.

Jack,
My water pump was working too when I'd get the error. On my 48 sedan bridge, there are 3 relay switches all located together not near any a/c compressor, display, etc and were next to impossible to find (under the bed in the 3rd stateroom). Made no sense to have them placed there, but they were. If I get a chance later, I'll take a picture of one and post it. I'm not sure if it is the "trigger" you mention or not.

I don't get any error codes and my unit seems to cool the cabin down ok, but I have a question. On my 98-310, when I first turn the unit on it starts right up and I get good water flow. After several minutes of running ok it will cycle off before coming down to the temp setting and the water flow will stop. It will come back on by itself and run untill it reaches temp setting, maybe cycling off again depending on how hot the cabin was to begin with. When it reaches temp it cycles off and the pump stops pumping water. Someone told me it should be pumping water constantly, even when the compressor is not cooling. Is this a normal operating cycle? I am not sure why it would cycle off before reaching the temp setting unless a relay or motor was overheating, cooling down and coming back on. Like I said, it does cool the boat down ok, but it seems like it could do it quicker. This is my first boat with AC and I love it.:smt038
