So, there I was an hour ago, at Captain Anderson's Seafood Restaurant where my 16 year-old was, indirectly, treating us to dinner. She (and 24 others, area wide) was accepted into a leadership program in our area sponsored by local businesses, and dinner was provided by them. As we were finishing up dinner, a surprise guest showed up for an inpirational speech about leadership and some basic philosophy on life.

Coach Lou Holtz - no kidding. In the flesh. Quite inspirational.

Pretty cool to see Lou Holtz. Funny thing though about the video you posted - Michigan beat Penn State in that game and held them to 3 field goals, lol.

I hope my 16 yr-old's leadership career goes better.

who?

Wow congrats on the aspiring 16 yr old! What kind of stuff does the program teach? Class room lessons, hands on, mix?

The first day is a day at the "Ropes" course on the local military base (on which, I currently work, oh by the way). The ropes course is an exercise in leadership where a small group is given a task which requires both physical and mental capabilities. They take turns being the leader. There will be a set of bars, barriers, painted areas not to touch, ropes, planks of wood... (from memory - I did this about 18 years ago at Sq Officer School).

The goal is normally to get everyone across. Sometimes one person is handicapped (such as can't use arms). Some are kind of easy, once you figure out the trick. Others are almost impossible to accomplish. You may need to put a plank down, move 1/2 of the people onto it, hand another plank forward... then, send two back with the plank, then bring 1/2 forward again....

On other trips, they will visit corporations in the area and be given tours and challenged with tasks associated with that corporation. There is a class project for the year (for the community). They must serve community service time. They can't miss the Ropes course. They can only miss one other day, with a valid excuse. After this weekend, they will be active during school days, 1 day per month, 8 hours per day. There is a graduation ceremony at the end.

Thank you for your interest.

John,

You sound like a proud dad...you should be!!! Congrats!!!

Mike

Thank you. I am. This is the one step my older daughter lacked (leadership square) to get a serious scholarship (she is studying accounting at the Univ of Fl - getting in there is no small feat at all). She did get the 100% tuition/books in Florida scholarship, which is very nice, but my younger daughter thinks she wants to go Ivy League. I think she needs a full ride scholarship, or our old 250 will seem like a pipe dream, let alone our 340 or a future 420.

Sounds kind of like The Apprentice...does anyone get voted off!?

Sorry, dang TV.

John that sounds like a great program. You should be proud, but did Lou mention anything about text messaging?>

John,

My youngest (just turned 19) daughter is a sophmore at Florida, came home from her freshman year with a 4.0 unweighted GPA (takes after her mom)! She's on a earned 100% scholarship too! Her younger brother is in Law School, older brother is out doing his thing (music).

Another proud dad,

Go Gators!!

You'll have to keep us posted on your daughter's progress as she moves through the course. Sounds like a great opportunity for her. Congrats!

Well done. 4.0 at UF is a huge accomplishment. My daughter was at the top of her HS class, but at Florida, is working hard to get low 3.X's. She took a couple Summer Classes at a local division of FSU. Her friends from FSU struggled in Summer school while my daughter breezed by. They got 4.0's at FSU main campus. Florida is the nut-cutter.j

Go Gators. Take my money and score!
