I need a little help here....

I am serving as adviser for a buddy of mine that has the itch to buy a boat. (Lucky Me!)
He would be wet slipping the boat in Sausalito, CA. While he would have allot of options as to where he can boat from there, he would like to make an occaisional trip over to San Francisco.
So, the question of the day is: How much boat do you need to have under you to safely navigate San Francisco Bay on a less than ideal day?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Jim

Most of the boats in the harbor across from Sausalito are 35-45 feet and up if that is any clue. There was a 39 foot SR in there last year but they were mostly other brands I did not recognize. You do see lots of 30 to 35 foot sailboats. Hunters are big in the sailing clubs. 26 foot Solings with deep keels too. In fact there are lots of the smaller sailboats stored on shore that are day sailors. And you see small power boats at the ball park, but I don't think they cross the bay and are local boats from the city. You should take a power squadron course and learn the quirks of the bay. It is not as deep as you think and has interesting currents, fog and lots of shipping traffic.
