Been chasing a specific shot - but there are some fundamentals that I am perfecting first... I'll say this - DJI has done a great job with their design - but there are still significant skills required to MASTER this.

I'm looking for a hands free shot at roughly 8 feet off the water - facing the boat with us on the bow at 20kts... low, quick...

The seas this weekend wouldn't allow for us to be on the bow - so we settled for some practice...

cool.. which model DJI ?

Put that thing on auto pilot and everyone get on the bow for pics, it'd be way cool man.

And if you fall off, the drone will follow the boat and capture the boat crashing into something and your video will be EPIC VIRAL! Make sure you leave the DJI controller on the helm when you get up on the bow.;)

I think he should do a rough water version too. Sorta like Lt Dan on the shrimp boat, that would be even EPIC'er. I can see it now, up on the hard top, hanging on to the all around light, is the is that all you got,.... he'd make so much money off Youtube he'd be able to afford life jackets. bwaaa,ha,ha,ha

LOL! Hopefully it's obvious - but maybe not.... there will be others (capable others) on board.

I have a Phantom 4. Haven't had the balls to fly it over open water yet, but my son probably could do it.

(PFD's on kids under 13 is federal law)

There's no such thing as an age/use based federal PFD law. The "federal law" states only that there must be one USCG approved PFD onboard for every occupant and that any boat over 16' must have a throwable.

States set who has to be wearing PFD's while underway. Worth noting is that two of the top 3 states for watercraft registrations (by quantity) set the age at 6 years old (Florida and Michigan)...

From Wisconsin DNR:

Federal law requires children under the age of 13 to wear a USCG-approved life jacket while underway in an open vessel on federally controlled waters.

From Boat US:

State Requirements for Life Jackets
In states where no children's life jacket law is in place, a U.S. Coast Guard interim rule requires children under 13 on moving boats to wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket that fits.

This rule does not change or supersede the existing law in states which have life jacket laws, it only applies to states that have no laws. Please see the list below for the latest laws in your state.

Please note that these laws provide boaters with the minimum age that a child is required to wear a life jacket. It is still a parent's responsibility to decide if a child should wear a life jacket, even in situations where the law does not require it.

Either way, USCG is giving a ticket in the above scenario. Sorry to hijack, back to drones. :)

Interim? Sounds like some weird Wisconsin thing. Or something you'd find in the dark corners of the internet that no real USCG guy would ever know about. But I'll take it...haha...thanks for sharing :)

You don't need a Calander ...you can just come here to CSR to find out if it's winter yet :)

Nice shots, but are they really worth the risk to get?
People on the bow or swim platform of a boat on plane can go wrong quick.

I'm afraid I have to side with JVM and others who commented on the kids on the swim platform.

It's unsafe. Period. No way is anyone on my boat allowed outside the transom door UNLESS WE ARE STOPPED. Especially with kids that small, and kids are NEVER allowed outside our cabin without their PFD on. And nobody is allowed on the bow while we're on plane. It's OK if we're cruising at cocktail speed, but no faster than that, and I come to a dead stop while they're walking to and from the bow on the side walkway.

It just is not worth the risk.

The words of a wise Captain.

It's all fun and games until something happens. Easy to say "its ok, we have done that for years" - then something happens and you as the responsible Captain ask yourself - "Why was I so stupid, I know better". That is when it is too late and lives are changed forever. As a paramedic that responds to boating mishaps - people get hurt, some really bad . . . . . . thing is 95% were due to unsafe practices and preventable. Please be safe out there.

...just enjoy the video. why always voice your opinion? big boat was barely moving in calm seas. geeez already
