Exhaust Pipe Rust Through - Need a Source

Well... the engines are back together from fixing cracked coolant tank brackets. We sea trail in the morning to make sure there are no leaks. We have delayed our departure until Friday which is fine as there is a big cold front moving through (this always happens when we leave on a trip).

The welding on the exhaust pipe was $30. I'll keep them on for the season and get new ones in the fall.

:smt038 yeaaaayyyy, "The Duck Bill Don" is back up and running. Have a great trip and take lots of pics to share with the rest of the class.

Did you rotate the tube 180 degrees so the welded spot is now dry?

Honestly, if the welder used stainless steel rods and was a decent welder, the old pipes are as good as the new ones will be, metallurgically speaking.

Have a good trip...............!

Can I come on the trip with you? :wow:

Just kidding..........glad it is fixed and have a great time.

GMTA

Frank, I was thinking in the same vane ... end for ended the pipes until the base cause is corrected.

soo...how'd the test run go????

I sure hope the repair is functional AND looks pretty.....you know that Skip will be in your bilge at BIH to critique....

Hmmmm.. :smt017 ......it's not like Gary to not get back.....I hope all went well and he's enjoying his trip.....

Critique? No, merely to kneel before 600 plus horses of Cummins QSM 11 thunder, and to ogle what I hope is my next boat--a big DB so I can escape to the bridge, secure the hatch, and oh, never mind, there I go digressing again.
Fair winds and following seas, Gary, and hope we see you at the inner harbor

I'm here.... I'm sitting on my bridge in Soloman's Island. I've dodging storms on the southern bay for the last day and a half. Thank goodness for XM weather.

Boat is back together and runs great. put about 124.7 NM on it and even a little rough seas for about an hour or so...

Off to Rock Hall on Monday morning.

Maybe I'll start a thread about this trip and post some pics.

BTW. The weatherman lied. They said 10 knot winds today and my fancy dancy Airmar Weather Station was clocking 15-22 knot winds (true) out of the NE and several thunderheads. THEY LIED!

Damn Gary, didn't know you were heading this way. We were out for a bit (mainly just to get fuel) and our marina is right across from Solomons.

We've got friends enroute from NY for the week, should be here any minute, but we will all be out tomorrow. We're going to give them the tour. What marina are you in?

Goota run, they'e here...

We are at Zahnisers until Monday morning (K dock T head). Come by and I'll let you wash my boat.

Hey Gary - we were motoring through Solomons Harbor giving our friends the grand tour and saw your boat. Guess we caught you at lunch (it was around 1230 Sunday) as we didn't see anyone on/around your boat. The new antenna array looks great!

We walked over to The Pier around 12:00 and grabbed some lunch. I had the rock fish stuffed with crab imperial. mmmmmm....

We'll see you at BIH I guess.

Checked everything on the engines this morning and no leaks or surprises. Going over in a little bit to put in about 380 gallons of diesel and off to Rock Hall. We'll leave here about noon and try and let this wind lay down a bit... appears to be blowing out of the North about 20 knots with gusts to 25 knots currently between here and Baltimore.

Sharp eye and a good call, Dave M. I see the 'problem' as what you describe. I'd get the holes welded (from the inside), lug the pipes for bonding and forget about it; next time you replace the 'connectors' between the stove pipes and exhaust get the ones that do not have wire reinforcements and never have the problem again. Just my 2 cents.

I was poking around the site looking for something and read this post. To bring this post to a conclusion 9 months later, the exhaust tubes did not make it through the season without rust holes coming back in other spots. I ended up having to replace them. If you have a 480 DB in salt water, this is something to watch out for as the guy at DeAngelo said this is a common problem with this model because the tubes sit in salt water at the low end. However, the new tubes I got were made out of Monel instead of 316 stainless that the OEM versions were made out of. The guy at DeAngelo said the Monel ones will last "forever". An interesting note was the guy also brought up the grounding lug being added before I did and so the new tubes have that. The new Monel tubes were about 400 bucks each.

Anyway, if you are looking to buy a 480 DB (or 52 DB) or already have one, this is something to keep an eye on. Sorry for the late "closure".

Also, Wesley? You may want to move this to the "Diesel" side of the forum.

I only lazily read through the whole thread, but fwiw my exhaust tubes are grounded.

I also had my coolant brackets replaced, as they too had started to crack. Of course that's not covered under the extended SR warranty. Which I'll never buy gain.

Hopefully you have also replaced those cheap-o brown plastic air filters on the turbos... I'll let Matt (Pirate) fill you in on what happens if you wait too long to do that...
