Mother and step-father got new dockmates at their marina and had went out on their boats this past week. Yesterday they were on our boat with us when their new neighbors called and asked if they wanted to go back out. Long story short they ended up inviting us out with them today soooo....They have 2 boats. A 34' Silverton flybridge and a 20' deckboat. Went out on the flybridge and I ended up driving most of the time on it. WE dropped anchor and he fired up the gennie and we ate and hung out for awhile. Really nice breeze sitting at the helm. On the way back in his port engine stalled and wouldn't start so we had to dock with one engine. No issues there. Jumped on their deckboat and we went upriver through the locks and almost into Pittsburgh. First time for us to ever go through locks so that was cool. Back at the dock I went to grab the rear dock line while the owner was grabbing the mid-cleat line. Pulled the line right out of my hand. I quickly realized that the boat must still be in gear for me not to be able to hold it. I reached up over the seat and yanked it into neutral. By then the owner was back at the helm and bumped it into reverse about 1' before hitting the swim platform of their flybridge. He has been boating over 40 years ago I guess so now I guess I won't feel so stupid when I screw up...lol. In the end it was probably one of the best boating days we have had

Now that I have more time to post I will add a little. So I had never been on a bridge style boat except at the local SR dealer in the building. I drove this one for awhile yesterday and even being about 90* out it was nice and cool up on the bridge. Very nice breeze. He also had a Simrad that was pretty cool. He didn't have everything connected to it but still cool. When we anchored he fired up the gennie (yeah it was an onboard genny...lol) and cranked the AC and lights. The women sat in the cabin and ate. I never really liked these type of boats until yesterday but now I'm starting to peruse the ads section...lol. Not seriously...yet. But I really did like that boat. We would have to spend alot more time on it to justify it and not sure we even need it on the Ohio River though.

So would a Simrad be justified in my boat? It's carb'd so no computer and being on the Ohio GPS isn't really needed. We may go to Erie at some point though.

On another note, yesterday was our first time going through the locks and we have now planned to take our boat through the locks to Pittsburgh 2 Saturdays from now. We will be following them. We have to go through 2 locks to get there

A gps might not be necessary from a getting lost perspective, but can provide you with accurate speed information and fuel consumption data. A gps will also help with navigation by allowing you to use waypoints that in turn will allow you to know when you will get someplace. And since many of the displays now come with built in gps and sonar you might want to reconsider

That's what I'm wondering. Our boat has a Garmin in it but it's probably the original from 2006. It's a GPSmap 182C but when we are in the middle of the river it shows us being on the highway 1/4 mile away...lol. I only use it for MPH and anchor drag. There is alot more functionality but I haven't really dug into it cause I don't think I really need much more from it. At some point I'd like to trailer to Florida and do a Bimini trip but that may never happen. Here is a shot of the one from yesterday. Oh, they said the water temp was off by 25*...lol

One more good thing that came out of this boat ride. Wife got to see first-hand a windlass in action. She liked it so maybe we will have one for next season
