Seems Jim-Bob thought it would be a good idea to roll into the parking lot at 12:30 am, with 200 gallons of diesel fuel in 55 gallon barrels, drag a hose halfway down the dock & "fill-er-up"!

He woke up a live aboard who called the Sheriff, who happens to be close friends with the marina owner. Word on the street is that the perp has until Monday at noon to get out of Dodge.

I'm guessing he thought he could save a couple hundred bucks. Seems to me like alot of effort & risk for such a small reward.

Any thoughts?

Do your marinas have fuel? Our marina used to until our current owners. It's funny how the things in the contract that the marina has to abide by aren't as important as the ones slip renters must abide by. For example, our contract says no fuel to be brought in via cans, or whatever. However, as our marina has decided not to provide fuel services, thus being in breach of contract, I don't feel bad about putting gas in the boat any way I see fit.

You're contract actually says the marina will make fuel available to their slip holders?

Our contract says that we will have fuel, pumpout, restroom facilities, and an on-site manager. The only one they're holding to is the restroom facilities.

I don't think I'd like that, are marinas/slips hard to come by in that area?

I have been tempted to do the "self serve" fillups with jerry cans, but there's just too much risk of something going VERY wrong that would outweigh any financial benefit. Hindsight is always 20/20... Imagine how you would feel after the open can somehow falls over, spilling onto the dock and into the water, making a large sheen visible for all - including the MOE Officers OR imagine how you would feel hearing the "whoosh" of the starting explosion caused by your ungrounded/static charged gas can, thereby changing your life forever (if you were to live through it). All to save how much???

I once met a mechanic that survived a gasoline fire, ignited while repairing a vehicle. Let's just say he'd sure like to replay that day and take more care to observe safety precautions. He was horribly disfigured, but was thankful to live through it (although he admits he wished he would die at the beginning of his recovery).

Please be careful with gasoline!

Our marina makes fuel available from diesel pumps on 2 different docks and gasoline from 2 locations on the same dock. The gas is ethanol free and the diesel is filtered and treated with biocides and conditioner. We have a standing policy against fueling boats from gas cans, jerry cans or truck mounted tanks for environmental and safety reasons. The marina has to make and enforce that policy in order to get permits from DEP to pump fuel over the water. We can fuel dinghy motors and small outboards with portable fuel containers, though.

It's a matter of playing the odds and if you get a ton of boats trying to fill 200 gallon gas tanks with jerry cans there is a big f#%* up potential for going wrong and whoever screws up is going to get his ass sued off!
Like Jim said "Be careful with gasoline"

That sounds like a ton of work. What you save couldn't really be worth all the work.

I have my own place. Last year the closest gas dock was 10 miles away. I'd pay a premium to have a closer gas dock!

If you've ever watched a video of a marina fire you'll know why they have rules against filling your tanks with any kind of portable container. It just ain't worth the few bucks you'll save.

We got a guy on our dock that puts gas in his boat to save "a few bucks". Beyond the danger of this practice is also the introduction of ethanol fuels to his tank. I said it wasn't worth it to me to save "a few bucks" versus the cost of a pump out. Our marina fuel is ethanol free.

I've never done it to save a few bucks. I've done it out of necessity. There aren't that many places around here with fuel, and I got to the slip last spring and I was very low. I didn't know they weren't planning on having fuel until after I'd arrived. I put it in just to get to another marina.

Our marina doesn't sell diesel. So people have fuel-oil trucks come from time to time - marina ownership is fine with it b/c it's not an incendiary hazard nor does it take food off their table.

No fuel allowed on our docks....will cost you your membership! We have a gas dock so you can buy there or bring your own during off hours. Our liability insurance does not allow fueling on the Main Docks or Launch Ramp, Mike.

Where is the danger? I get the environmental potential, but only to a certain extent there too but how is it any more hazardous filling from 5 gallon cans vs the pump?? I've never done it but I'm curious as to the added risk factors.

Here could be one reason. About a yr ago a guy was stealing cans of gas from garages and storage buildings. He used a lighter to see how much gas was in one can.:smt101 He burnt down the building he was stealing from. His relatives could be boat owners. True story.

I agree. What a bunch of BS from the marinas! You have to buy my gas at a substantial cost to the boat owner. When fuel/gas is $0.40-$0.80 cheaper if I haul it in versus buying it at the marina, sorry I am hauling mine in at 30 gallons at a time, which isn't just a "few bucks" in savings.

Now if you signed a contract, well, that's on you....
