I am woundering if there is an easy fix for an eratic tachometer. Sometimes I can tap on face of tach and it will fall back down but too often the analog gauge reads 2000 rpm even at idle and will go up from there as throtle increases. Sometimes it just pegs at 4000 rpm.

Check your battery connections!!

You can check out other posts on the subject (that is where I found the following info). I was told that the Tacks are used for all engine types (4,6,8 cyl). There is a switch on the back of the tack to set it for the specific enginer set up. My Tacks did the same thing and I pulled the dash and turned this switch back and forth numerous times. Put it back together and they have worked fine ever since. I have a 1996 33 Sundancer (454 EFI's)

HiFi,

After a couple of years of living with it, I finally took these rcommendations seriously. I pulled the gauge panel away far enough to get a screwdriver on the adjustment potentiometer (pot), and spun it around several times to clean the contacts. I have no detents, just a pointer and symbols stenciled on the housing. I lined the pointer back to the 8 cyl mark and put the panel back. The erratic tach has been solid for about 20 so far. It's certainly worth the effort.

Did the same thing on mine last month and problem fixed....

I also had the same problem with one of my tach's and sprayed a little contact cleaner as I turned the setting screw in the back...nice and smooth again.

THANKS MEMBERS,

Problem corrected thanks to your advice.
