About 6 years ago, I had someone take off my aluminum engine room vent covers and have them powder coated. They looked pretty bad and I was happy to get that detail taken care of. Unfortunately, They didn't last as long as I was hoping. About 3 years ago, they started peeling again and got worse and worse until they got to the top of my "To Do List". I was going to take them off and send to a company in Orlando that specializes in aluminum coatings but after the screws were taken out, I could not remove the vent cover. I came to the conclusion that the person I hired 6 years ago used 5200 to caulk the back in. I didn't want to take the chance of ripping the fiberglass apart so I decided to refinish them in place.

Wow, goes to show you that famous 5200 should be used less and less on the boat, only where appropriate.

Nice job Randy, the covers look great. Did you do powder coating yourself?

I agree with your 5200 statement, it is used too often. Regarding the paint, since I couldn't remove the vent covers, I couldn't powder coat the pieces, I primed and painted them in place
