Engine misfires in mid range

This is now day 29. In my previous post I thought I had good news. Not so fast. I checked with MarineMax to see if they received the computer, and they informed me it’s out of stock and they will not get it until the 15th. This is not what I was told last Thursday from MerCruiser tech-support. They said the computer I need is in stock in Atlanta, but they stock the computer in basic form which must be programmed to my engine. Apparently MarineMax does not know this. I have asked Tech Support to give MarineMax a call and get this straightened out. Is there any other little thing that can go wrong?

The saga is over. Day 39 and I got the boat home. Here is a summery of what I have learned in the hopes it will help others in the future.
1. MarineMax claims they have factory trained technicians, but you couldn't tell it by me. They spent 7 hours to find a part that did not fix the problem. Then they wanted to order a wiring harness, which again would not fix the problem.
2. Rather than waste time and money throwing parts at the problem, they should have called Mercruiser Tech Support to get higher help in solving the problem when they could not find an immediate fix.
3. Looking back on all this, I should have been smart enough to call Tech Support myself once my mobile marine mechanic could not find the problem. They would have pointed me to the computer, which my mechanic could change out with the other engine in a few minutes. Problem solved in min time and money, without getting MarineMax involved.

IF you do pay for the part, you are entitled to (and they are required to give you) get the old part back.

If an item is replaced under warranty, then you are not entitled to get the defective part back.

Hi Flytrade,

I am a new Club Searay member and am experiencing the exact issue you outline above. I finally came across your post which reignited some hope that I could fix my problem. Smartcraft gauges on a 8.1 DTS Mercruiser. Miss in the midrange, speedo goes to zero And lost engine comms fault message on the Tacho readout. We have tried a number of things to resolve while reproducing the problem while the diagnostics computer is connected. Cannot pick up any errors through the laptop diagnostics even watching all sensors under slow motion when the problem occurs. We have disconnected the Pitot, disconnected the trim tabs, disconnected transducer etc, replaced throttle control and PCM, cleaned all connectors and so on, and the problem still occurred. I finally came across your post and we are now going to swap over the ECM to see if that fixes the problem. Let’s hope so based on your experience. Will repost hoping it will be with good news and thanks for posting your experience and giving me some hope that this issue might get fixed.

I'm sorry I found this thread a few months too late. I had the "lost engine com" fault twice on my 240. Both times the MM service manager had my try a hard reset. Both times that failed to fix the problem. Both times replacing the ECM fixed the problem. Fortunately I had an extended warranty from Mercury and they picked up the tab for both ECMs. Total down time was about 4 days.

Hi Highslice, thanks for that insight. Seems like the ECM is the part to hone in on based on this thread so hoping the ECM fixes my problem as well. Will re-post once i know more. Thanks

So after several weeks of the new ECM going back and forth to mercruiser to load the right software version, apparently there were multiple version releases around the time of my boat being manufactured, we finally have been on a test run with the new ECM connected and the engine seems to be running smooth with no misses occurring in the mid range. I hope this has now solved the problem and I can enjoy the summer without the intermittent engine miss fire occurring.
