Engine Gauge

Do you mean the little symbol that is "in" the hour meter display? Next to the numbers? It's an hourglass.
 
Flashing = engine running/hours counting up. As long as the hours are counting up on the stbd side, I wouldn't worry about it. Wouldn't be a bad idea to compare the hourmeter readout to the computer sometime - just to double check things.
 
Your ECM - the engine computer (runs the fuel injection, etc). It's the primary holder of engine hours. You'll need someone with a Merc scanner (or aftermarket equiv). Some places may charge a minimum amount of time for it, but if you do it at the same time you're having other service done, the cost pretty much gets absorbed.
