Engine cuts out/bogs down at higher RPM's

Does anyone have a pic or diagram of these check valves? My dealer is going down to it today or tomorrow to take it out. I'd like to be a little more knowledgable about what we are talking about.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I know this will probably seem strange, but look at this thread post 21 and then 25

I had both the fuel pump and the PCM relays changed. Just a thought, fixed my issue.

Have you had the codes looked at?

Hi there,

I am very new to boating so it is difficult for me talk about all of this in the way I should.

I looked back at Berth's posting #17 and what he wrote is what my mechanic told me about the check valve.

I remember that he replaced the fuel line, the fuel filter and the fuel separator before he replaced the check valve. I am sorry that I cannot give you more information about where it is or what it looks like.

By the way, I only have a single engine on my boat.

I do know that once it was fixed I never had a problem with my RPMS again.

Good luck!

Well I think my problem is solved. Tech came down and all stuff fuel related checked out. Pump etc were fine. Then we decided to pull the filter that previously was gunked up. Found that under filter was a screen that I didn't check before. Sure enough it had gunk on it too. Not sure why. But cleaned it and the boat seems to run fine. Hopefully that was it.

what filter are you speaking of? the flame arrester?

Its not really a filter but more or less a screen. Not the flame resistor. The filter/screen is located undernreath the paper fuel filter insert in the filter housing. I don't have a pic of it. But if you have the same kind of filters (not the traditional oil filter type) then you probably have it in there too.

Unfortunately my problem returned. Boat ran fine then I decided to go WOT and within 10 seconds it occurred again. After that it occurred when I even gave it 3/4 throttle. Argh!! Back to the drawing board.

Cincy, i have an older boat with 7.4litr and had the same problem. Rebuilt carb changed filters changed coil changed plugs changed ICM computer.
Turned out that I was loosing power from the harnes at higher RPMS and that was why it kept going from 3500 to 1000.
Test your power to your coil if the light goes dim at higher rpms it is causing you to bog down.

I know its been a while, but how did you figure out it was the low pressure fuel pump? I am having the same problem and I replaced both fuel filters( disc and cartridge), sucked all the fuel out of the tank and replaced with new. I had set the option on the smart craft to display the fuel pressure and when it bogs the fuel pressure stays constant at 42.5. That never changes. So i though that it wasn't and fuel delivery issue, but a water in fuel. That aint it... lol Driving me nuts now. Labor day weekend coming up and gotta have the boat ready...

Mustangous - make sure you have a Smartcraft sensor for fuel pressure - I activated my oil temp sensor in SC and it stays at 32 degrees - no sensor installed!

Sorry to hear about your issue. Mine was solved by process of elimination on the port engine last year. Not sure if my techs could tell which it was. They ended up replacing both. When my starboard engine did it this year they went an replaced both pumps under warranty. Along with the filters. Not sure how to diagnose which one it is. My SC doesn't have the fuel pressure option. Does your 496 have the same type of cool fuel assembly? It's a very weird set up. If it were me it makes sense to replace the high pressure pump first if you have similar symptoms.

Yeah its fuel pressure. sea ray changed all my options (don't know why) and added oil temp. I don't really need that one so i removed it from the list....

I have another thread on this board about this issue on my starboard engine. It was almost a distasterous result with fuel leaking everywhere. VERY scary. Search my posts and you'll find it. I think it's titled very scary start to weekend. I have more info about the issue.

hmmm so it wasnt the low pressure fuel pump, or was it the pump and they just messed up reinstalling the fuel line?
