Dale have you looked into getting the inside redone? just woundering the price of doing that. I have a 1997 210 with the same problem and the dealers were no help, called Sea Ray direct and they couldn't help although very pleasant and tried to help the best they could. I liked the idea of using bed liner also might look into that but I think that would be a rough surface. This

This is from a paper that was inside my owners manual info. I haven't tried this yet but think I will.

Cleaning and repair guide for acrylic/Abs surfaces. Repair deep gouges or cracks.
    1. Scuff surface using a scotch brite pad with soap and water
    2. wipe down surface with Pre-kleano
    3. cracks or gouges should be ground open into a "v" shaped grooveto ensure good surface contact and fill
    4. using fiberglass evercoat #870 adhesive/filler, fill the void leaving slightly high to allow for shrinkage. Apply per directions and allow to cure. For fine pin holes or blemishes the dynatron DYN 592 glazing putty may be used.
    5.Sand repaired area smooth.
    6. proceed with one of the painting procedures.

Redoing the interior is certainlly one option and I have not looked into it. I have talked to a boat shop about covering the engine cover with vinyl but he has not been able to look at it yet.
Thanks for the info from your owners manual. I haven't seen that. The dealer did try some glue but it only made things worse. I'll look into this.

It was a separate. Piece of paper in my packet when I purchased my boat back in 97. If you want more info I could probably scan it and send email it is only 4 pages.

Thanks but that's not something I want to tackle. I have quite a few cracks and it would be a major job. I'm surprised that Sea Ray hasn't suggested something like that.

Thought I might Chime in at this point to....I also have a 1997 210 BR and have the exact same problem. Think im going to have a fiberglass shop just make me a new one. I fixed mine last year with epoxy/fiberglass sanded painted etc. but vibrations and kids etc. had all the cracks return. To bad because it looked really good.:smt089 Hopefully its not too much for a fiberglass version to be made.

I actually talked to a fiberglass shop last year. There price would be around $5,000.00 about 4,000.00 for making a mold and 1,000.00 for the piece. I might pay 1,000.00 for the piece but 5,000.00 for one was a bit much. Let us know what you come up with.

I had an email conversation with a man from North Carolina with the same problem. He had the engine cover covered with vinyl by a local shop for about $400. It was done about two years ago. He sold the boat but tells me that he's heard that the fix is holding up very well. That's the option that I'm going to persue this year.

    Dale,
Sorry to take so long to reply but I haven't been on in a while. When I had my sun pad and Bench seat made I had alot of other things done too. I had them remove the passenger seat and build a rear facing lounge type seat with storage underneath, new Bimini, bought a used captains seat with a flip up bolster and had that recovered to match, both bow cushions recovered, carpet replaced, and of course the sun pad and bench like I said. All was built with heave vinyl upholstery, 3 colors, stainless hardware, gas shocks under the pad, and all star board(no wood). My boat is practically better than a new 185. Just my opinion. I like the older hulls rather than the newer look. Also they wet sanded the hull and stripped off all th decals for me and detailed the boat. All together I paid $3600 and my boat is one of the best looking mid '90s boats I have seen. I will post pics for everyone tonight. This year I had all new guards put in. The interior work was done spring of '09.

    hi
I have a 1997 sea ray 185 bow rider and I had the same problem(craking engine cover). I had a fiberglass company make a mold from my old cover and have made copies out of fiberglass instead of PVC. Each new cover will run about $650.00 plus shipping. The new covers will not have the padding inside as the old pvc had but looks great. You need to save all the hardware and use it again. I can send you photos of the new cover.

I have a 1997 Sea Ray 210 BR with the same problem. I visited a boat repair shop here in Austin, Tx today and was told they could make a mold for $1,000 and each new cover would cost around $250. Does anyone know if the 185 has the same cover as the 210? If they are the same, perhaps we could get a group together to share the $1,000 and then purchase our own cover.

I don't know if the 210 and 185 are similar. When I called Sea Ray they did not know of any cover other that the 1997 185 that would fit.

KW4162, what is the weight difference between the PVC and the fiberglass? Where is the manufacturer? Can you post pictures?

    Thanks,
    Dalej

I have a 1997 190 Signature with the same problem. I was thinking of taking it to a body shop that does fiberglass work and see if they could overlay the ASB with fiberglass cloth (possibly two directions) and finish it. I had an accident with my motor home and they fixed the front bumper cover and front panel and it looks like new. Has anyone tried this approach?

The new engine cover made from fiberglass weighs about the same as the PVC cover. The new cover does not have the insulation layer as the PVC one does. I had a local fiberglass manufacturer make a temporary mold from my original cover and he was able make 5 duplicate covers from the mold. I will have pictures of the cover on ebay at the end of next week.

I just ordered a new cover from ebay. I think that this is the best solution. I just wish that SeaRay had made this available.
