Hey peeps, Ive got a 1999 searay 185 sport, and the other day the up on my trim went about half way and now the up sounds as if its working but no up. The down works fine and when I hit the trailor button it comes up fine. Worked great before that any ideas. thanks in advance, my first boat and learning alot...

Kinda weird. If your shift UP works to a certain point, but the trailer button goes UP all the way?
The first thing I'd check is the oil level in the trim reserve
(pump).
Or unless your switch in the shift handle is making contact on and off. Wd-40 it.
Battery power at 12 -14 Volts.

There is a reostat that controls the up trim, it craps out. The fix is to bypass it by direct wiring the trailer up switch to trim up switch.

In other words, forget it and use your trailer up switch to trim out the boat.

As JerryS said, can bypass this "safety feature". It is to prevent over-trimming the drive when running the boat. Mercruiser has a trim sender and a trim switch on the outdrive. One on each "arm". Looking from the back of the boat, the right one goes to trim gauge (sender) and the left one (switch) cuts power to trim pump at a set height. You can't buy just one, you have to get the set. And it is a royal pita to change them. You can use trailer switch to trim or find the wires coming into boat behind engine. There will be two sets of two. One sender and one switch pair. Unplug wires and jump them. If trim gauge pegs low (key has to be on to see this) then you have wrong set - plug those back in. Try other set. Once jumper in place your trim switch on shifter should work again. BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVERTRIM WHEN RUNNING ENGINE!!! Hope this fixes your problem.

Trim sender switch on the outdrive might need to be replaced... Does the tirm indicator show the trim all the way up?

The Trim Sender tells the guage what to read.
Your options are:
1. Use the "Trailer Up" switch to trim out the boat.
2. Do as Todmr says and change the wires to bypass the reostat for the "Trim Up" switch. This will allow you to use the "Trim Up" switch as normal, but, it will not limit the upward draw of the outdrive. (Best Option)
3. Have a mechanic fix it. You get a bill, but, no real advantage. The mechanic thanks you.

it does show trim all the way up on the indicator on dash, what does this mean? thanks for any input...

Now, it sounds like you are talking about a problem with the sender rather than the trim up switch.

Are you absolutely sure that your "trim up" switch is not lifting the outdrive?
