Each fall we spend a month or so cruising Washington State. This year we did the Hood Canal and were on our way to Olympia when I feel on a concrete dock and injured my arm. The elbow socket popped out and I fractured a bone. The marina was very good about getting me an ambulance. The ride to the hospital took 45 minutes. Traffic was light but it was the nearest place that was felt able to treat me.
I was well taken care of at the hospital and given a cast.
We are Canadians and purchase travel insurance when we leave Canada. It has covered all things so far except for the shirt they cut off me.
So to all my traveling boaters when you leave your country make sure you have health insurance coverage. I never felt we needed it because we are both very healthy and have no medical problems.
It costs us a little over $3 a day.

Welcome to the.. FDC = Falling Down Club.... Get Well Soon and stay SAFE. :smt001

I fell on a concrete dock

Thats how I broke my ankle & got a nice big knot on my forehead. . :smt021

UPDATE
Insurance has paid out about $5,300 so far for the injury treatment and ambulance. In Canada this would have all been covered under provincial health care and our $450 a year supplemental coverage. The per capita expenditure in Canada by our governments seems to be almost $6,000 a year for health care. Just curious what are health care costs and premiums in other countries for similar coverage?

Do not drink until late in day and never until the boat is secure and hooked to dock or anchored. Scotch at 5PM and wine with dinner. Beer on hot day when sitting on the dock or back deck. 45 years ago could handle more.

Glad the insurance is working out for you. I think it would be an impossible task to completely compare the the insurance cost and coverages accurately on a forum. Most people do not know what is covered on the policies they buy.:smt043

Northern, I wish you well in your recovery. Your post brings up something I hadn't thought as we do our long range planning for taking our boat up to the Gulf Islands. Just a quick question for you about Canadian Insurance.....Is a foreigner (me) traveling in Canada covered by your provincial health care, or is that only for Canadian residents?

To get the government coverage in Canada you must be a Canadian and can not spend more than 6 months out of Canada. If you need medical help in Canada and you are not a Canadian the hospitol will bill you. The cost of service based on what it cost me is a lot less in Canada.
Best to get travel insurance. Our rate is $3 a day under 65 65 to 70 $6 a day. If you have gold credit card you may have coverage on that. With private health care in the US the coverage might extend out of the country.
If we had not had it the cost would have reduced our fuel budget. If you want any info on Golf Island PM me and I can give you some tips on things to do and places to stay.
