I will be cruising from western Nassau County (Jones Inlet) to Peconic Bay next weekend. Plan on running in the ocean to Shinecock Inlet and going thru the canal to Peconic Bay. If the seas are rough and with tropical storm Irene heading north they probably will be we will stay on the inside. I have not taken a boat with this kind of draft further east than the Robert Moses Causeway, do any of you south shore boaters know of any warnings on shoaling or misplaced buoys on the GSB route that I need to worry about?

Most people get in trouble while passing the area near Moriches inlet. Pay particular attention hear as they move the bouys each year due to changes caused by the inlet. Usually its a "dog leg". But I haven't run inside this year so I'm not sure how the bouys are configured.

The channel just east of Moriches is actually pretty straight this year, just a slight bend. We ran through it on our way back from Montauk Yacht club. It lined up pretty much with the bouys marked on the east & west sides of this area on the paper charts.
I did notice it was quite narrow there though. As we went through that spot there was a bird 20 feet to the south standing on a sand bar and it looked like 6" of water 5 feet to the north!
