So im trying to use the DSC features... Buddy just installed a DSC ICOM radio. I can place a dsc call to him... he recieves it ok but when he reply's i dont get it . When he orignates the call I dont recieve it . Same with location request.
so whos radios isnt set right? HE recieves all my requests . I get none from him. Simple answer is his radio but somehow i dont think so.

any thoughts ??

Rob

Oh and yes im tryingto find another person to test the radio with... but no such luck yet....

Is his radio hooked up to his GPS properly? He should be seeing either a satellite or the gps coordinates in his vhf screen if it is hooked up right, otherwise he is not sending out his position.

I should have stated that .... yes.... It is showing his position...

Someone said u have to manually set the radio to channel 70....

that didnt make sense ...and the directions dont state that .

Are you sure your radio can both transmit and receive DSC? I found out the one I've got can only transmit DSC locations :smt021

I've got a Uniden Solara DSC hooked to my Garmin Black box then to my Garmin 276c.

Assuming you are correct, this sound not be allowed in my opinion.

Defeats the purpose of DSC going to all boaters in range.

Ok spent alot time messing around with this ... this is what i discovered. :smt021

U can be on any channel and place a DSC call to someone. When u SEND a dsc call u tell them what channel they should meet u on. ( thought that was kinda cool )

Thats where the cool thing ends. When u send or request a postion with DSC... all u get are lat and long #'s They dont POP up on ur GPS screen with some icon like in my head i would have thought. ( that disappointed me )

I also thought u could have private conversations on the radio ( like side band on a CB ) thast not the case.

I just hope when there is a distress call that does pop up on the gps ... But i dont think so...

That technology is available but is unfortunately proprietary. For example, if BOTH vessels are using certain models of Standard (brand) VHF AND GPS units then their positions will show as icons on the chartplotter. In fact, it will show multiple vessels at once as long as everyone has the same equipment. Other mfgs may have similar offerings - not sure.

Same answer - Icom offers a scrambler option on some of its units, but they can only talk privately with other Icom units. And it has no correlation to DSC.

Pretty sure same answer as # 1.

I think it has to do with the type/class radio you have. ie:Class A Most funtions or Class D Fewest functions. :smt017

Humm...

Ok GPS and radio all raymarine... E120's and the ray 240 radio

I went tru all the books ... all the settings appear correct...

Guess i have to call raymarine...
